The Laboratory Manager ensures that Product Quality and Test Result Management procedures comply with standards and regulations by managing the activities of the department employees. Adheres to regulations and standards issued by regulatory agencies and accrediting organizations to ensure KBC is in compliance with applicable AABB, FDA, CLIA, State, OSHA, and Short-Supply Agreement requirements. Reports to the Vice President, Technical Services (VPTS).  

$2,500 Sign-On Bonus (after 90 days)

Hours:Monday – Friday 8:00am-4:30pm (must have flexibility to come in early and/or stay late for 2nd and 3rd shift teams).

Responsibilities

  • Ensures quality of blood and components by managing department activities, reviewing test results and employee performance, and competency testing.
  • Meets all requirements and carries out all duties for General Supervisor for moderate and high complexity testing, as defined in 42 CFR 493 Subpart M. Also carries out duties, as delegated by VPTS.
  • Achieves cost-efficient operations by evaluating procedures and techniques and through effective scheduling; prepares and monitors department budgets.
  • Meets production goals by ensuring that procedures, staffing, and techniques are appropriate for the functions and that workflow systems are optimum for inventory requirements.
  • Ensures quality of work performed in area by reviewing test results, audits, employee performance, training documentation, competency and proficiency testing, and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) revision.
  • Facilitates achievement of long-range plans and good manufacturing practice (GMP) compliance. 
  • Ensures acceptable validation and implementation of new or revised processes and equipment to include computer software, as needed.  
  • Oversees the implementation, auditing, and compliance with Quality System Essentials in assigned departments.
  • Supervises laboratory teams, providing daily guidance; participates in selection and hiring process, and is responsible for employee performance management, training and development, coaching, and discipline.
  • Participates in continuing education.
  • Maintains a current, applicable technical knowledge by monitoring industry trends and best practices, and by following related websites, articles, and publications. 
  • Involvement in internal KBC meetings with immediate team, and other department stakeholders.
  • Attends external workshops, conferences, and/or technical meetings to increase knowledge.
  • Implements computer software as it is related to test results and laboratory processes.  

 Work Environment: This position regularly involves the following:

  • Sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Fulfill basic clerical duties (typing/writing) for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally lift/carry up to 35 pounds without assistance.
  • Occasionally bend or reach to perform various job tasks.
  • Analyze complex situations and make sound decisions.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and work under pressure.
  • Visually differentiate and identify specific colors, and various shades.

 Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree; Medical Technologist MT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) required, with the appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • Three years of management experience in an organization regulated by good manufacturing practices, FDA, AABB or equivalent required, with two years in a similar blood banking laboratory environment preferred. Qualifications may be modified for viable internal candidates. 
  • MS Office proficiency, with the ability to navigate web applications, and other custom systems and software used to perform laboratory processes. 
  • Must reside in, or be willing to relocate to, the greater Lexington/Central Kentucky area. 
  • Valid Kentucky driver’s license with clean driving record; occasional travel to all KBC locations and to external events, required.
  • Ability to work flexible schedule to include occasional evenings and weekends and regular on-call rotation
  • Attention to detail, strong written and verbal communications skills.
