SIGNAL TECHNICIAN I:
Perform functions related to the installation, maintenance, and inspection of various traffic management devices, streetlights, and traffic signals. This position is entry-level, and training will be provided. This position reports to the County Traffic Engineer or their designee (such as the Traffic Operations Manager).
Position Duties
- Assists in the installation, preventative maintenance and repair of traffic signal equipment that may include cabinet assemblies, overhead signs, pedestrian signals, school crossing and school warning beacons.
- Tests and inspects traffic management devices.
- Ensure trucks and equipment are maintained and adequately equipped and supplied.
- Maintains work reports and records as necessary.
- Sets out traffic control devices, such as warning signs and cones, ensures proper placement of vehicles, and performs flagging duties as needed. Monitors traffic movements while on the jobsite to ensure safety of crews.
- Troubleshooting and repairing highway lighting.
- Perform functions related to the marking of underground traffic signal cables, streetlight circuits and fiber optic circuits.
- Inspect contractor’s work.
- May operate a lift or bucket truck, auger truck, forklift, or trencher under the general direction of a higher-level technician or supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Education/Experience:
High school diploma / GED and two years of working experience in traffic signal maintenance, construction, electronics, or an equivalent combination of formal education and working experience.
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:
- Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
- Must possess or obtain, within six (6) months of hire, an approved Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) certification.
- Must possess or obtain within fourteen (14) months of hire, an IMSA Traffic Signal Technician I certification.
- Must possess or obtain, within six (6) months of hire, an OSHA bucket truck safety certification.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
- Knowledge and ability to operate various pieces of departmental equipment and tools.
- Ability to understand instructions, both oral and written, in order to construct, repair, replace or install traffic signals and school beacons.
- Ability to answer calls and communicate effectively.
- Physical ability to perform manual labor, i.e., carry and lift equipment, tools, and machinery as necessary.
- Ability to design and maintain a safe working area.
- Operational knowledge of electronic devices, together with diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of such devices.
- Operational knowledge of computerized traffic signal equipment, preferably Econolite brand.
- Operational knowledge of local area networking (LAN), Ethernet, and Fiber Optic communications.
- Knowledge of and proficiency with computers.
- Ability to complete and maintain accurate records as necessary
- Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff and the general public.
- Ability to perform work under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to operate and work from an aerial lift and/or bucket truck.
Other Qualifications
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to work outdoors in adverse and extreme weather conditions (heat, humidity, cold, rain, wind, etc.). The employee is frequently exposed to noise, dust, fumes, airborne particles, uneven surfaces, heights, electrical energy, and stressful situations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
