Primary Purpose: Assist special education teacher(s) to provide for behavioral and instructional needs to students in the general education and special education settings. Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management and instructional programs; work under general supervision of principal, immediate direction of certified teacher, and collaboration with general education and special education staff.
Qualifications: Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED Valid Texas Educational Aide certificate Acceptable background check and fingerprinting results
Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to work with children with behavior disorders. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively. Knowledge of classroom technology Ability to lift 50 lbs. Knowledge of general office equipment Willing to be trained in Crisis Prevention and Intervention Strategies
Experience: Some experience working with children.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Support
Assist teacher in preparing and presenting instructional materials.
Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
Assist teacher in keeping behavioral records.
Help manage behavior of student; this includes intervention in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behaviors as needed.
Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
Assist teacher in with administrative records and preparing required reports.
Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
Assist in supervising students throughout school day, inside and outside classroom; this includes, but not limited to, lunchroom, and bus.
Student Management
Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning.
Assist students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
Help manage behavior of students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed.
Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning activities assigned by the teacher.
Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
Keep administration and teachers informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

Maintain confidentiality.
Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
Perform the essential duties of walking and interacting with students and/or district employees at the assigned work site.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None.
Equipment Used: Wheelchair lift, ramp, personal computer, copier, and audiovisual equipment.
