About the Department
The Prince George’s County Planning Department of The Maryland National-Capital Park and Planning Commission is seeking a Planning Technician III to join our planning team. The Department provides land use planning for the physical development of Prince George’s County, Maryland. As the second most populous county in Maryland, Prince George’s has a population of approximately 900,000 residents, is characterized by urban, suburban and rural areas, and is home to The University of Maryland at College Park, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and Joint Base Andrews. Position Duties
The Planning Technician III will apply knowledge of codes, ordinances, planning or regulatory functions, processes, and/or programs to collect and review information, determine accuracy of information, and explain and interpret information to the general public, architects, engineers, developers, and others.
- Conducts pre-acceptance, intake, review and approval of Natural Resources Inventory Equivalency Letters and Woodland Conservation Exemptions.
- Conducts pre-acceptance and intake of Natural Resources Inventory Plans and Tree Conservation Plans.
- Performs data entry associated with the intake of environmental applications.
- Assigns applications and referrals to designated Planners as needed.
- Prepares and manages environmental files for scanning.
- Assists in quality control and scanning of files.
- Provides assistance to customers in both the Countywide Planning and Department of Permitting Inspections and Enforcement offices.
- Collects and maintains data, databases, and other information for planning and reporting purposes.
- Serves customers directly both in-person and on the phone.
- Prepares routine correspondence related to the implementation of the requirements of the County Code.
- Conducts research and analysis necessary to develop and support environmental planning and other planning-related goals.
- Other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING:
Working knowledge of: County ordinances governing zoning, subdivision, and woodland conservation areas; County and Commission organization and policies, procedures, rules, and regulations governing permit and application processing; and County geography.
Skills in: reading various types of development plans; use of computer databases for entering and retrieving information; communicating with the general public on matters related to permit/application processing and compliance with codes and ordinances; and a variety of computer programs and applications for word processing, spreadsheets, map production, graphics, slide presentations, data entry, or tracking systems.
Ability to: work accurately and quickly while serving customers and responding to phones; understand and apply a system of procedures and rules; perform accurate mathematical calculations; and communicate effectively.
Working knowledge of: ArcGIS software; editing techniques in the ArcGIS editing environment; Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop; and Microsoft Access.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
- Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience with plan, permit and development application review.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total four (4) years.
