Duties

The purpose of the position is to operate one or more types of heavy equipment. Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable team member. Determining safe working loads and conditions and manipulating various controls in response to hand signals to move various equipment. Performing refueling and routine maintenance of equipment, including oil and filter changes, tire repairs and chassis and wire rope lubrication. Transporting a variety of loads including buoys, small boats, wood and steel pilings, vessel masts, booms, crane sections, engines, and heavy equipment and machines. Selecting and using miscellaneous rigging equipment such as cable, cloth slings, strongbacks and spreaders to lift, move, and position antennas, small engines crated materials, etc. *Building and setting up forms and molds to fabricate concrete sinkers weighting 2000 to 12,500 pounds to anchor buoys.

Qualifications

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT) Operation of motor vehicles. Work practices (including keeping things near, clean and in order.) Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation) Reliability and dependability as a Crane Operator National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
