The Norwich Free Academy is seeking a registered school nurse for our Sachem Campus location. The main responsibility of the School Nurse is to function independently in assuming the responsibility for judgement and discretion in performing professional school health nursing duties in caring for students, faculty and staff on our Sachem Campus. This is a 10 month full time position that follows the school calendar.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain a medical record on each student.
- Evaluate immunization status and follow-up on any student whose immunization status does not comply with state regulations.
- Register and obtain records on all new students coming in to school.
- Identify through careful examination of each student's record any medical problem, handicap, or exceptional needs and share this information with faculty and administration with instruction on how to adapt to these problems.
- Prevention of communicable disease by investigating community outbreaks and reinforcing proper ways to prevent spread of disease.
- Assist students and faculty in obtaining and maintaining maximum wellness through individual health counseling and support.
- Plan and coordinate physical assessment on all new students and tenth graders, as well as yearly physicals for all students who participate in competitive sports.
- Assist students and advise families in obtaining medical care when necessary.
- Be available to give emergency care at any area on campus and the grounds where an emergency exists.
- Perform state mandated screening programs on all students and assist student and family in obtaining follow-up if problem exists.
- Perform, analyze, and record blood screening hemoglobin tests and urinalysis on all tenth graders in need.
- Provide medical information to students, faculty and staff.
- Store and administer all prescriptions medication required by students and document their administration.
- Maintain a daily log of all-medical center visits and treatments.
- Evaluate medical problems and issue physical education excuses for those who are unable to participate in a regular gym activity.
- Evaluate students displaying symptoms of substance abuse and determine appropriate channels.
- Investigate suspected child abuse, assess any trauma evident, and refer to proper channels.
- Serve as primary caregiver for students with a variety of social problems, including depression and teen pregnancy, in conjunction with school psychologist. Active member of suicide prevention team.
- Maintain insurance records on any student injured in sports programs and send initial and follow-up letters on insurance procedures at The Norwich Free Academy to parents.
- Professional Development participation, as state requires, 10 contact hours every two years.
Education and/or Experience:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- Registered Professional Nurse with three years of nursing experience.
- Prior school nurse experience is preferred but not required
- Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Connecticut.
