GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Custodian plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment for children, staff, and families within the child care facility. This position is responsible for routine cleaning, sanitation, and minor maintenance of classrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and common areas, in accordance with health and safety regulations specific to early childhood education settings.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Clean and disinfect classrooms, bathrooms, play areas, and staff rooms daily.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and dust all designated areas as scheduled.
  • Sanitize high-touch surfaces (e.g., door handles, light switches, tables, toys) frequently.
  • Restock soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and other hygiene supplies.
  • Remove trash, recycling, and compost from all rooms and dispose of it properly.
  • Assist in cleaning spills or accidents quickly and safely, especially in classrooms.
  • Perform light maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, fixing loose fixtures, or reporting hazards.
  • Ensure outdoor walkways and entrances are free of debris or other hazards.
  • Monitor inventory of cleaning supplies and report when restocking is needed.
  • Follow cleaning and sanitation protocols required by local health departments and licensing authorities.

Collaboration & Teamwork

  • Communicate effectively with classroom teachers, support staff, and management to ensure smooth operations.
  • Attend staff meetings and training as required.
  • All other duties as requested to maintain the success of the center and ECS4Kids.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:

This position reports to the Center Director

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Previous custodial, janitorial, or cleaning experience preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Complete TB screening & physical before having direct contact with children. Renew every 2 years.
  • Current First Aid and Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training.
  • Completion of 25 hours of in-service training each year, July 1 – June 30

  • Ability to follow a cleaning schedule and complete tasks independently.

  • Discretion and awareness of working in a child-sensitive environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Indoor and outdoor work in a childcare center environment.
  • Interaction with young children, staff, and parents may occur during working hours.
  • May involve early morning, late afternoon, or evening shifts depending on facility needs.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and stoop for extended periods.
  • Capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds (e.g., trash bags, supply boxes).
  • Use of hands and arms for scrubbing, sweeping, lifting, and operating cleaning equipment.
  • Tolerance for exposure to cleaning chemicals, odors, and varying temperatures.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
