The New York Public Library (NYPL) is hiring an Associate Manager for our After School program, which provides free, drop-in homework help and enrichment activities for school-age children across NYPL locations in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island. This position will be responsible for a portfolio of NYPL After School locations in Staten Island and Manhattan and will involve regular travel to branches in those boroughs and occasional travel to the Bronx.
Own:
- The supervision of 18-25 part time hourly staff, including recruitment, hiring, training, schedules, performance management, and coaching of After School tutors
- Communication and support for branch staff at program locations, including regular visits to branches in Staten Island and Manhattan
- The coordination of program logistics including staff schedules and coverage, purchasing and organization of materials, and planning for meetings and workshops
- Assistance with the maintenance and analysis of program data
- Trainings and workshops on academic support and enrichment for school age children in a public library setting to support the innovation and success of program staff
- Trainings in program supervision and best practices for branch staff at After School locations
- How NYPL After School can best support strategic vision and goals for Children’s Services at NYPL
- Systems and processes for managing part-time staff at scale
- Trainings and professional development opportunities to most effectively provide a meaningful and successful experience for After School Tutors and branch staff
- Review and understand the program goals, scope, and current management processes
- Begin to establish relationships with the branch staff at their portfolio of branches
- Begin to implement management processes for their portfolio of NYPL After School branches and staff
- Support the ongoing recruitment and hiring process of NYPL After School Tutors
- Successfully and flexibly implement management processes for their portfolio of branches and staff
- Contribute to the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of new and returning program staff
- Maintain strong and supportive relationships with tutors and branch staff at their portfolio of branches
- Contribute feedback and insight about potential program improvement and expansion
- Collaborate with the NYPL After School Manager and fellow Associate Manager(s) to implement a high-quality, scalable, and sustainable homework help and enrichment service for students ages 6-12 in NYPL branches
- Recruit program tutors and manage the logistics of the hiring and onboarding process
- Provide supervision, coaching, and support to a team of part-time NYPL After School tutors
- Coordinate program logistics, including the purchasing and organization of materials
- Develop and implement training for tutors on best practices for providing homework support and enrichment for school-age children in a public library setting
- Contribute to training for branch staff to support the success of NYPL After School at participating locations
- Work closely with NYPL’s Teen Reading Ambassadors staff in the Young Adult Program & Services department to support the collaboration and goals of the integrated programs
- Coordinate and communicate regularly with internal partners including Children’s Programs & Services, Communications, Human Resources, and more
- Maintain and analyze program data, including attendance
- Support the implementation of new projects and initiatives
- Perform other related duties as required
Required Education, Experience & Skills
- Master’s Degree in Library Science, Education, or a related field
- 3+ years of experience working with youth in a library, school, or non-profit setting
- Experience leading teams, including staff supervision, coaching, communication, and support
- Experience coordinating work with many different constituencies, including internal stakeholders, external partners, and diverse patron/program participant populations
- Experience as a creative youth development professional who is innovative, organized, pragmatic, and knowledgeable about the role of the library in supporting NYC students
- Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a team in a dynamic, collaborative department
- Commitment to the values of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility
- Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
- Comfortable with regular travel (typically on weekday afternoons), to library branches primarily in the Bronx, and occasionally to Manhattan and Staten Island locations
