The primary responsibilities of the Director of Nursing (DON) are to assume accountability, performance, and support for the Health Services team which includes Healthcare, Assisted Living, Memory Support neighborhoods & our on-site clinic
Summit Square Retirement Community is looking for a dedicated Director of Nursing (DON) to join our team. The DON plays a vital leadership role, holding full responsibility, and accountability for the planning, delivery, and quality of nursing services across all levels of living. This includes:
· 18-bed Skilled Nursing Center
· 59-bed Assisted Living areas—encompassing 20 Assisted Living, 22 Catered Living
· 17 Memory Support residences.
· On-Site Health Services Clinic
This role champions a person-centered approach to care, ensuring that each resident receives individualized support that respects their preferences, promotes dignity, and enhances their quality of life. The DON ensures compliance and awareness of regulatory standards, including those set by the Virginia Department of Health for long-term care and the Virginia Department of Social Services for Assisted Living. Collaboration is at the heart of this position. Working in constant partnership within interdisciplinary teams, the DON thoughtfully supports resident well-being while also cultivating positive and team-oriented environments for staff. The DON helps create a culture where residents feel empowered and supported at every level of living—and where team members are engaged, valued, supported, and inspired to grow. In addition to collaborative efforts with departments, medical professionals, families, consultants, visitors, volunteers, and more- this role works to prioritize a resident-focused and customer-service mindset, while representing the community’s best interests & overall goals.

Regulatory:
- Strive for successful inspections with minimal deficient practice that meet Federal &State regulations including Office of Licensure and Life Safety. Support compliance with other regulating agencies such as Virginia Board of Nursing, Local Health Department, Adult Protective Services, Ombudsmen, Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Service and the Centers for Disease Control.
- Develop language, beliefs, habits & routines that proactively move the culture from an institution to home. Create an environment in which the resident identifies the center as home. Move clinical nursing processes & practices in alignment with person directed living.
- Maintains a presence among residents and team members. Rounds routinely throughout healthcare. Investigates issues and concerns in a timely manner. Keeps leadership team and administrator informed of difficult situations.
- Pursue professional development through ongoing webinars, seminars, reading, organizations and other educational opportunities.
- Maintain survey ready at all times. - Ensure survey book is up to date and available for surveyors when they arrive.
- Submit capital requests to Executive Director or Administrator of Health Services for review. Process all purchases with appropriate paperwork for approval, payment, etc.
- Supports recruitment, on-boarding, and retention of team members as needed.
- Ensures completion of clinical leaders’ evaluations in their introductory period as well as annual evaluations. Works collaboratively with HR to address performance, attendance, attitude, communication, etc. issues as they arise and document as needed.
- Provide leadership, guidance and management to healthcare team. Conduct team member meetings one to one and/or groups. Make yourself available to all shifts.
- Maintain knowledge of safety rules and regulations related directly to your department. Monitor all aspects of the team member safety and injury prevention with the department. Monitor team member injuries and incidents to prevent future injuries.
- Collaborate with medical providers, including the medical directors to ensure safe, quality, evidence-based care is provided in a timely manner.
- Thoroughly investigate alleged abuse immediately. Report allegations of abuse to appropriate community and state agencies as needed in a timely manner.
- Approve requests for time off for healthcare team members. Assist with schedule as needed and ensure adequate coverage. In absence of scheduler, review and approve payroll report timely.

- Understand and respond to resident/customer needs; give complete and timely responses and always be respectful and courteous while following through with communication efforts.
- Take responsibility for decisions, actions and results.
- Work as a team player within health services department and with other departments within Summit Square
- Communicate effectively with residents, family members, guests, co-workers, supervisors, etc.; actively listen and clearly share information demonstrating effective oral and written communication.
- Exercise good time management practices while maintaining quality of work; plan and organize work load to ensure job duties are handled efficiently and effectively and provided timely responses to those who request information.
- Ensure personal hygiene, appearance and dress; present neatly groomed appearance and follow department dress code ensure identification badge is worn where visible.
- Ensure all emergency preparedness practice drills and protocols are followed.

Requirements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.
- Current RN license in good standing Virginia/Compact State Approved.
- Experience in CCRC environment preferred.
- Comprehensive knowledge of state/ federal regulations and the ability to ensure compliance.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in nursing administration and/or leadership.
- Strong organizational, leadership, and team-building skills.
- Possess critical thinking, problem solving and root cause analysis skills.
- Ability to work with confidential information and maintain its’ integrity.
- Effective written and oral communication skills; to receive and share information as necessary to guide, coach, correct and lead direct reports.
- Knowledgeable of computer applications related to position and willingness and ability to acquire new skills needed to adopt, support, and drive implementation of new technologies as required.

Physical & Environmental Considerations: Work Environment: Office and Healthcare Center setting with normal lighting levels, comfortable temperature ranges, good air quality and ventilation and low noise levels. Physical Demands: Lifts, carries, pushes or otherwise manipulates equipment and office materials weighing up to 60lbs. Always use proper lifting and moving protocols and techniques. Work Hazards: Exposure to body fluids and other infectious drainage. Minimal hazards if standard precautions and other infection control practices are used.
