The school nurse is responsible for conducting a health services program at the assigned pre-school, elementary and secondary schools for the evaluation, improvement, and protection of the health of students and school personnel in accordance with state law and District policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
Credential: Valid California credential authorizing service as a school nurse. Current CPR and First Aid certificates from American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Education: Bachelor’s degree, including all courses required to meet California credential authorizing services as a school nurse. Current license as a Registered Nurse. Valid certificate of audiometry.
WORK YEAR: Current work year is 186 days, to be worked between July 1 and June 30.
SALARY SCHEDULE: Placement on Support Services Salary Schedule, Appendix J depending on education and experience ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Evaluates student health and development status and conducts referral and follow-up activities for identified health defects.
Confers with parents and private physicians to determine special needs required by students with special health problems and provides assistance to school staff in accommodating such needs.
Performs state mandated screening procedures, such as vision, hearing and scoliosis, and guides parents to appropriate source of medical care for identified defects.
Provides emergency nursing services including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for ill or injured students at school.
Assists in the implementation of state and District policies related to administration of medication during school hours.
Assists in the identification, management and prevention of infections and communicable disease in the school and community.
Evaluates the behavior of students referred by school personnel for possible substance use and/or abuse and takes appropriate action.
Provides health education programs for students including growth and development programs for 5th and 6th grade students.
Identifies cultural practices that affect the health of students and assists families and staff in developing an understanding of such practices.
Performs comprehensive health and development assessments for students being referred for special education services.
Participates in the process of assessment, diagnosis, and management of students with special education needs.
Provides specialized health services to students with special needs.
Serves as health resource and provides personal health counseling for school personnel.
Provides staff in-service training related to health and safety.
Acts as a liaison between community agencies, the school and the home.
Assists in identifying safety and health hazards on school sites.
Reports students suspected of being injured by other than accidental means to the principal and to appropriate child protective agency.
Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION: Under the immediate direction of the site administrator. Under the general direction of the Coordinator of Health Services for professional-technical aspects of assignment.
