Equinox VGM is currently inviting applications for a Radio Technician to join our growing team as the company transitions from mine construction to mine operations.

Position Summary

The Radio Technician is a team member of the IT department and is responsible for the installation and maintenance of the primary mesh network that supports our mining fleet, along with the VHF Communication system. This role must ensure work is performed in accordance with health, safety, and environmental and legislative requirements.

 

This position is located at the Project site, working on a 14 days in/14 days out rotation.

Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous health, safety, and environment advocate, adhere to and promote health, safety and environmental standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrate and promote a respectful and healthy work environment at all times.
  • Promote a proactive approach of continuous improvement by reporting all Health, Safety and Environment incidents, and communicate solutions.
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and test radio system hardware and software components that are integral to the operation’s mining activities.
  • Install and troubleshoot all industrial IT networks and infrastructure including but not limited to Fiber Optic, SCADA, Mesh, Serial Networks.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot wiring on heavy equipment including Haul Trucks, Drills, and Dozers.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on trunked radio systems and components of the radio system.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and operate advanced test equipment, diagnose mobile and land based radio system problems, and retain and apply training for various system components.
  • Repair or replace defective parts, components, or systems, using a variety of electronic troubleshooting tools, hand and power tools.
  • Radio system administration including monitoring and system analysis.
  • Work with outside contractors and service providers as required.
  • Conduct final inspections to ensure that each work order has been completed to meet safety standards.
  • Actively participate in orientation and training programs.
  • Conduct daily inspections of the work area.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Technical diploma in Radio Communications, Telecommunications, Instrumentation, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ related hands-on field experience with VHF, UHF, and/or HF radio systems.
  • Experience in computer modelling related to two-way and microwave radio communications; installation, repair and ongoing maintenance of applicable radio repeater systems including associated hardware and equipment such as:
    • Towers
    • Support structures
    • Cabling
    • Solar power systems
    • Remote site monitoring and enclosures.
  • Experience with industrial wireless mesh networking
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working in a commercial setting.
  • Experience working in a remote industrial environment is preferred.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental requirements at remote sites.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of the electrical code.
  • Knowledge of PLC, VFD, communication hardware and ECM can bus circuits. 
  • Ability to provide mentorship, coaching and training to an apprentice.
  • Strong knowledge of the OHS, mining, and construction regulations.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, prints, technical drawings, schematics, and procedural manuals.
  • Outstanding communication (oral/written) skills required.
  • Sound analytical skills and the ability to use these skills to support decisions or proposals
  • Technical skills with all applicable radio systems
  • Excellent knowledge of two-way radio and repeater systems
  • Excellent knowledge of repeater/radio installation and 12VDC power system installations
  • Knowledge of radio and emergency communications
  • Strong team building skills.
  • Experience in dealing with contract services and manufacturer representatives.
  • A valid driver license and a driver’s abstract.
