 Misericordia offers a community of care that maximizes potential for persons with mild to profound developmental disabilities, many of whom are also physically challenged. By serving society’s most vulnerable citizens, Misericordia also serves the families who want the best for them yet cannot provide it at home.

Through a spectrum of residential options on its 37-acre Chicago campus and in the community, and with a wide variety of programs, Misericordia currently serves more than 600 children and adults residentially, from diverse racial, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds. Twenty percent of our residents either come from poverty families or have no families and are wards of the State.

Misericordia is currently hiring for a Charge Nurse.

The Charge Nurse will be responsible for daily department operations, and demonstrate leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication skills to promote the ongoing growth and development of their team members. The Charge Nurse will also be responsible for supporting, aligning, and applying strategy for their area based on the organizational strategic plan set forth by the Executive team. This role must demonstrate competency in the care of all patient age groups specific to unit/specialty, and ensure health, safety, and welfare of all residents in an atmosphere which promotes quality, respect, and dignity of the person. The Charge Nurse is the first line of response to daily operational issues; monitors work processes; and supports implementation of division initiatives. In partnership with the Director of Nursing (DON) and Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON), this role will also manage and develop staff nurses by providing “in the moment”, real-time feedback, and coordinating staff training and development activities to contribute to ongoing talent development. The Charge Nurse will collaborate with other Nurses, the DON and ADON, and the Vice President of Clinical Services to provide exceptional clinical, physical, and emotional health services for our residents. 

Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of Misericordia philosophy, purpose, and services. Aware of policies and procedures concerning residents, families, personnel, and more specific home policies and procedures. Involvement in development and implementation of policies and procedures. 
  • In alignment with the ADON, DON and VP, evaluate and develop strategies and plans for ongoing departmental success. Provide ideas, recommendations, and suggestions for opportunities to improve our service to residents as needs evolve over time. 
  • Accountable for the delivery of high-quality nursing care within residences/facility.                                    
  • Supports clinical team (RNs and CNAs) and ensures that the standards of practice, and the implementation of clinical policies and procedures, for resident care are consistent with those of the profession and the community.
  • Acts as first line of response to daily operational issues; monitors work processes; is flexible to department needs and assumes resident assignment if necessary. 
  • Makes recommendations to improve workflow issues, and acts as a catalyst to affect policy, procedural and resident care changes to safeguard resident safety, security, and confidentiality at all times.         
  • Develops staff for clinical competence and acts as a resource for clinical issues and clinical problem resolution.         
  • Implements changes impacting personnel, processes and procedures to meet organizational goals.          
  • Assists ADON/DON with quarterly IDPs and performance management.                                       
  • Provides support to staff completing orientation in collaboration with consistent preceptor assignments.     
  • Provides support for facilitation, translation, and education of EMR and technological tool integration into resident care area workflow.
  • Promotes and monitors compliance with HIPPA regulations.                                                                    
  • Assists Nursing Leadership to maintain continuous readiness for surveys.
  • Facilitates chart audits focused on problematic and regulatory required areas of documentation
  • Participates in admissions and annual resident multidisciplinary meetings as applicable.   
  • Among the clinical team, promotes collaboration, teamwork and morale in support of others and team results.
  • Assures cleanliness, removes clutter from the area to ensure a safe environment.
  • Attend to unintended observations such as noise and strong smells                                  
  • Maintain open communication and effective partnerships with other departments. Includes residential, vocational, social service, business office, maintenance, housekeeping, personnel, and all consultants involved with the homes.

Accountability:  Director of Nursing and Assistant Director of Nursing

     Qualifications:                               

  1. Registered nurse with 2-3 years' experience
  2. Must have supervisory experience
  3. Leadership skills and / or management experience, including but not limited to project management, training, mentoring staff etc.
  4. Experience taking the initiative and responsibility; demonstrates a high degree of professionalism and ownership
  5. Proven ability to work as a team member
  6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  7. Understanding of EHR
  8. Basic computer skills  

Pay: $39.00-41.00 an hour
