Description

Position Objective:  The role shall independently provide scientific support services as a Scientific Operations Manager II to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, Division of Intramural Research. The primary objective is to provide scientific services and deliverables through performance of scientific support services.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide overall scientific operations support services for the branch, facilitating a seamless workflow by coordinating resources, managing logistics, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Responsible for all lab equipment maintenance and repairs; maintain schedule for routine maintenance and ensure vendors are paid on time.
  • Develop and assemble personnel documents, along with comprehensive checklists, to facilitate the appointment and renewal processes for lab staff, ensuring that all necessary documentation is obtained and organized efficiently.
  • Schedule, organize, and craft agendas/presentations/handouts for all scientific talks and collaborative meetings; ensures all logistics for scientific speakers and their reimbursement under a Professional Services Contract (PSC).
  • Enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of scientific research and laboratory operations within the branch/center by managing laboratory resources, overseeing project implementation, maintaining rigorous quality control standards, and establishing strategic scientific objectives that align with the overall mission of the branch/center.
  • Serve as the travel coordinator, creating detailed travel itineraries for researchers and visiting guests as required, while ensuring the preparation of all necessary documentation for local, domestic, and international travel activities.
  • Facilitate scientific operations by processing requests for equipment and supply orders and acting as the primary contact for the management of all maintenance contracts related to lab equipment.
  • Act as a liaison within the lab, designing and implementing communication systems that promote the effective exchange of information regarding projects and lab or clinic activities within the branch/center.
  • Contributes to scientific management by assisting in research initiatives and coordinating special projects and meetings on behalf of scientific leaders within the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), thereby enhancing collaborative efforts and project outcomes.
  • Keep current on federal operational policies and procedures; build new and update current standard operating procedures to reflect process changes to enhance scientific operations.

 

Qualifications


Basic Qualifications:

  • BS or BA degree in any field, or additional 2 years of experience working in a lab or clinical environment.
  • At least 1 year of experience directly supporting scientific or clinical staff.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Assertive and respectful personality with a high level of social skills in order to deal effectively and persuasively with all members of the scientific community from a post-bac to staff scientist to a senior investigator.
  • Skilled in multitasking within a fast-paced environment, adept at prioritizing competing deadlines.
  • Possesses exceptional critical thinking and innovative problem-solving skills, enabling the effective analysis of complex issues and the development of strategic solutions that enhance operational efficiency and scientific outcomes.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 applications.
