About the Department

Alabama State University, Department of Public Safety invites applications for the position of Police Officer.  Under direct supervision, the police officer performs duties relating to the protection of university students, faculty, staff, personal and institution property through the enforcement of law and university rules and assume low level supervisory duties as assigned by shift commander.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Patrols assigned districts, watching for and investigating unusual activity or circumstances
  • Checks buildings for unsecured windows, doors, malfunctioning lights, fire hazards, dangerous conditions, and may occasionally guide new employees on patrol duty
  • Responds to radio calls or any crime violations in progress and reports unusual incidents
  • Checks vehicle registration, individuals IDs and outstanding warrants
  • Completes reports such as incident reports, activity logs, and field interview cards
  • Assists tourist, motorists, faculty, staff and students
  • Gives directions to persons seeking location of campus buildings or departments
  • Assists with unlocking vehicles, calling auto services, starting stalled cars
  • Directs and clears traffic in situations such as an accident

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a high school graduate or GED approved by the State Department of Education, 21 years old have a valid driver license with an insurable driving record, must not have been convicted of a felony, misdemeanor involving force, violence, or moral turpitude, have 2 years of law enforcement experience, considerable knowledge of Title 13 (A) criminal code to include elements and classes of crimes and use of deadly force, and Title 32, to include types of traffic violations. Must be able to perform general police work such as moving barricades, pushing automobiles, lifting batteries, boxes, running and chasing suspects, and be skilled in the use of firearms with proficiency to qualify under Peace Officers Standards and departmental standards.
