About the Department

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Coordinator, Student Support Services is responsible for assisting the Director for Accreditation and Accountability with the implementation and monitoring of regulations and compliance for student admission and enrollment, as well as the monitoring of various student programs.  The Coordinator, Student Support Services also serves as the Division Title IX Coordinator and provides training, guidance for schools, conducts investigations and completes reports as well as maintains detailed records. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Oversees home school instruction for Hanover County to include correspondence with families, the applications process, maintain records of home school students, and review proof of progress.

  • Consults with the Director of Accreditation and Accountability and corresponds with parents who elect to educate their children by private tutoring or seeking religious exemption from compulsory education.

  • Applies policy and facilitates the school enrollment process to Hanover County Public Schools.

  • Supports and provides training for school registrars related to school enrollment.  

  • Manages inquiries and application requests for student variances to attend a school outside of the student’s assigned attendance zone  within the division. 

  • Applies policy,  reviews, and approves multiple family requests.

  • Manages inquiries and information regarding school attendance zones.

  • Manages and approves requests for school sponsored field trips.

  • Serves as the McKinney-Vento liaison for homeless students in Hanover County.

  • Coordinates Foreign Exchange Student placements.

  • Facilitates effective relations with community offices and agencies, which provide specialized/professional assistance to students and parents.

  • Serves as the Title IX Coordinator for Hanover County Public Schools to include providing guidance to schools, conducting investigations, providing training, maintaining detailed records, and completing reports.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Duties

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of the principles, policies, practices and procedures of school administration. Proven leadership abilities. Ability to conduct training for a myriad of groups. Demonstrated command of Standard English, both spoken and written. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret policies , memos and reports. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, parents, students and the general public. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions in accordance with established policies and procedures.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Required: Postgraduate Professional Certificate. Endorsement in Administration and Supervision. Master's degree. Valid Va. Driver’s License. Three years of recent successful experience as a classroom teacher, administrator, or supervisor, in the endorsed subject area.    


A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the required experience.

Physical Conditions:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. Work is typically performed in an office setting with extended periods of time at computer terminals; however, job requires standing, walking, bending, stooping and light lifting of up to 20 lbs. unassisted. Communication may not be cooperative in nature and requires tact and discretion. Frequent telephonic and personal contact with Department Heads, Principals, internal and external organizations at State level, employees and the general public is required. 


Frequent travel to school sites throughout the County and periodic state or regional travel, including overnight stays, is required. Attendance at meetings outside the normal duty hours is often required.
