About the Department

Definition:  Under general supervision of the Transit Manager, picks up and delivers passengers requesting transportation; performs minor routine vehicle maintenance duties; responsible for safety of passengers while being transported.  Drives various sized larger vans up to a 15-passenger van.  This job class is treated as FLSA Non-exempt.

Position Duties

1. Transportation & Safety:  Drives van or other assigned vehicle to transport passengers to a variety of destinations in and around the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.  May operate other vehicles as appropriate and as directed by supervisor.

  • Collects appropriate fares and/or punches ride tickets; complete daily fare reconciliation and deposits.  
  • Maintains passenger log of all passenger pick-ups and drop-offs.  
  • Assists passengers in entering and leaving the van.  
  • Monitors safety of passengers before and during transportation, including safety belt use, child safety seats, and smoking prohibitions, etc.  
  • Correctly securing wheelchairs within the vans and the passengers in wheelchairs, securing all children correctly within the vehicle, ensuring that all passengers are using their seatbelts.

 

2. Vehicle Maintenance: Documents and maintains driver vehicle inspection report daily, and bring maintenance concerns and needed repairs to work order desk.   

  • Keeps records of vehicle use, including mileage and routine maintenance needs.
  • Notifies supervisor of needed repairs.
  • Cleans and performs minor repairs and maintenance on assigned vehicle.  

 

3. Training:  Maintains all legal permissions to drive Community vehicles and uses all available resources to maintain currency regarding driving and vehicle safety issues.

  • Attends any training opportunities relevant to transportation services as well as all Department staff meetings.
  • Attend all ADOT required training and ensure all certifications are current.

 

4. Miscellaneous:  Makes deliveries of materials as directed by supervisor.  Performs other job related duties as assigned by the Fleet Management Manager, Assistant Transportation Director or Director of Transportation.  

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of the history, culture, customs, traditions and government of the SRPMIC. 
  • Knowledge of the addresses and locations used by senior citizens, students, and other passengers in and around the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations covering the operation of a commercial transportation vehicle in Arizona.
  • Knowledge of Community and state ordinances and laws concerning operation of a motor vehicle in the State of Arizona.  
  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance requirements and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures for transporting passengers including seniors.  
  • Knowledge of handicapped vehicle lift operation.

 

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with clients, staff, Community Members and the public. 
  • Skill operating a transportation vehicle safely and in accordance with Community and state laws and ordinances.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures.

                                                          

  • Ability to perform routine maintenance on vehicles and to identify repairs needed.
  • Ability to operate a passenger van and/or commercial vehicle.
  • Ability to assist handicapped passengers. 
  • Ability to identify needed vehicle repairs. 
  • Ability to assist passengers with loading and unloading. 
  • Ability to bend, squat & kneel in order to secure a passenger’s wheelchair.
  • Ability to evacuate passengers from the vehicle during an emergency situation
  • Ability to maintain a vehicle usage and maintenance log.  
  • Ability to work outdoors including excessive heat and cold. 
  • Ability to perform basic routine vehicle maintenance and to identify needed service, repairs and maintenance.  
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment and use a 2-way radio and mobile telephone. 
  • Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs.  

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education & Experience:  Graduation from High School or GED equivalent. 
    • For enrolled Community Members without a GED, must obtain a GED.  Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.
    • Must possess, or be able to obtain within 3 months of hire, CPR and First Aid certification. 
    • Must maintain CPR and First Aid certification, and be trained in universal precautions.    
    • A minimum of 1 year driving experience preferred.

 

 

  • Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.

 

  • Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill

  1. Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License.
