PRIMARY PURPOSE: Perform skilled, independent work in the repair, maintenance, roofing, and construction (rough and finish) of carpentry and other building related systems using standard trade practices. QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED
Valid Texas Driver License and must be insurable
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Demonstrate ability to follow instructions
Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work
Thorough knowledge of the repair, maintenance and construction involving roofing, carpentry and concrete crafts using standard trade practices
General knowledge of state and local building codes
Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and field sketches
Considerable skills in locating and correcting defects related to building structures
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written
Ability to operate hand and power tools
Ability to work independently
Experience:
Five years experience as journeyman, carpenter preferred
Must have the ability to work self-supervised
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Maintenance and Repair
Construct as directed and maintain exterior and interior systems involved in carpentry related tasks in the district including but not limited to canopies, walls, foundations, roofing, fencing, ceilings, and flooring.
Perform scheduled and emergency repairs and/or maintenance as directed. Work with other crafts and departments as assigned. Receive instructions from other department supervisors as required.
Inspect problem roofs to determine the best procedures for repairing them.
Estimate roofing materials and labor required to complete jobs and provide price quotes.
Manage assigned work orders; maintain material and labor costs applied to each job.
Show accountability for supplies purchased or issued.
Inspect building exterior and interior, playground equipment, and grounds; perform maintenance and minor repairs.
Detect and report needed major repairs on building structures and their systems, including lockers, furniture, and equipment.
Move, install, assemble, and repair all school furniture and playground equipment as needed.
Assist other technicians as directed by supervisor.
Always act in lead position unless accompanied by other designated Class I employee.
Work with other maintenance employees toward accomplishing maintenance department goals; meet performance standards.
Perform operator maintenance on assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment to ensure continued serviceability.
Safety
Set up scaffolding to provide safe access to roofs or other structure.
Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing. Operate equipment and use tools according to established safety procedures.
Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
Maintain tools and equipment; perform preventive maintenance as required.
Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organized facility and work area.
Other
Willingness to work flexible hours, including evening maintenance and/or adjusted hours, as assigned.
Attendance is a requirement of this position.
Carry out all duties in accordance with BISD Board of Education policies and administrative regulations.
Maintain a high personal standard in the following areas: attitude, cooperation, dependability, judgment, initiative, self-improvement, and as a role model for students.
