About the Department

This position performs the more complex and difficult work in the maintenance of parks and other landscaped areas and related facilities. Serves as a lead worker of a landscape maintenance crew. This class represents the journey working level.  It is distinguished from the Landscape Maintenance Worker by its responsibility for providing lead direction to a landscape maintenance crew in accomplishing specific and assigned tasks.

Position Duties

Assists in preparing performance evaluations of subordinate landscape maintenance personnel. 


Provides lead direction to landscape maintenance workers including determining work procedures, assigning duties, providing training, resolving problems, and enforcing City regulations and policies.


Supervises and directs landscape maintenance workers engaged in the preparation and application of insecticides, fungicides, pesticides and herbicides to control the growth of weeds and infestation of plants. 


Operates the more complex power-driven equipment used in park maintenance. 


Fertilizes lawns and plants in City parks and landscaped areas.


Plants annual, perennial and bulb flowers in planters, medians and other landscaped areas. 


Mows lawns in City parks and landscaped areas using gang mowers. 


Prunes and trims trees, and removes dead trees using handsaws, chain saws, clippers and ladder trucks. 


Performs routine maintenance and care of grounds keeping equipment and tools. 


Plants new or replacement trees, shrubs, or turf throughout the City's parks system and landscaped areas. 


Maintains work records as required. 


Maintains irrigation sprinklers by cleaning and adjusting heads, digging up and repairing broken lines and altering automatic controls as necessary. 


Operates manual sprinkler systems at designated points to irrigate parks and other landscaped areas. 


Installs and assists in the repair of irrigation systems. 


Utilizes specialized equipment for leveling and grading landscaped areas.


Irrigate designated turf and landscaped areas with remote systems or standalone controllers. 

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Three (3) years of experience performing park or landscape maintenance work. Note: An equivalent combination of related training and experience may be considered.


Possession of or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment a valid Class B State of Nevada Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with tanker endorsement.


Must possess or haveability to obtain within twelve (12) months of appointment, forklift certification, and Nevada Restricted Pesticide Applicators Certificate.


All required licenses and certifications are conditions of employment. Required licenses and certifications must remain valid and in effect throughout incumbency.


Must pass a nationwide fingerprint-based record check, and a wants/warrants check.

Other Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of proper methods of operating power-driven construction equipment such as dump trucks; proper use and care of tools and materials used in the repair, construction and maintenance of parks; planting techniques and planting and fertilizing materials; methods for trimming and pruning trees; procedures and techniques of pesticide and herbicide application; safe working practices.


Skill in using personal computers, facsimile machines, and telephones; using heavy equipment, such as water truck and dump truck.


Ability to provide instructions and guidance to subordinate employees engaged in grounds maintenance work; diagnose problems in parks as they impact grounds maintenance such as tree and turf diseases and insect infestation; operate medium power-driven equipment; perform manual work such as digging, raking, sweeping and hoeing; lift and/or move heavy objects; keep simple records; communicate effectively with others verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and follow written and verbal instructions.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

General Physical Requirements Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds unassisted.

Physical Activities The worker performs physically demanding manual work in climbing, crouching, grasping, handling, kneeling, reaching, and stooping; lifting, pushing or pulling heavy objects; and operating motor driven rotary mowers and other power equipment. 


Visual Acuity The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment; to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly of fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes; and/or assembly of fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes; visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.


Working Conditions The worker is subject to adverse weather conditions, toxic agents, hazards associated with the operation of various motor driven and handheld power tools and equipment.
