The Food Safety Specialist plays a vital role in protecting public health by ensuring all food products meet stringent safety and quality standards. This role is responsible for monitoring and improving food safety practices throughout the production process, from raw materials to finished goods. Through regular inspections, employee training, and adherence to regulatory requirements, the Food Safety Specialist ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal food safety laws.
The duties listed below are representative of the types of responsibilities required for the role. Additional tasks may be assigned as needed to meet the needs of the organization:
- Conducts routine inspections of food processing and handling areas to ensure adherence to sanitation and safety protocols.
- Tests food product samples for contamination, microbial activity, and compliance with quality standards.
- Reviews, evaluates, and enhances operational methods related to food handling, storage, and processing to optimize safety practices.
- Develops and delivers engaging training programs on food safety standards, hygiene, and regulatory compliance for all personnel.
- Creates user-friendly training materials and safety documentation tailored for cross-functional teams.
- Participates in internal and third-party food safety audits; documents findings, identifies areas of non-compliance, and recommends corrective actions.
- Prepares detailed reports based on inspections and audits, and follows up on implementation of corrective measures.
- Maintains clear and proactive communication with management regarding potential risks, violations, and continuous improvement opportunities.
- Collaborates with production and quality assurance teams to integrate food safety protocols into daily operations.
- Develops, implements, and routinely updates food safety policies, procedures, and standard operating protocols.
- Stays current with evolving food safety regulations, best practices, and industry standards.
- Applies principles of HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices), and other recognized safety frameworks.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Public Health, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in a food safety or quality assurance role within a food manufacturing or processing environment.
- Safety Quality Foods (SQF) Practitioner certification strongly preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of USDA, FDA, and other regulatory agency requirements.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information in an accessible manner.
- Experience delivering training and facilitating learning on food safety topics.
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken) is required.
- Ability to work independently, handle multiple priorities, and meet tight deadlines under pressure.
