About the Department
Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation is seeking an energetic and experienced professional to fill the role of Recreation Program Specialist within our aquatics division. This vital role will help lead experiences, operations, and programming with the indoor Midco Aquatic Center as well as our five outdoor aquatic facilities.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Ensure the safe and efficient operations of six aquatic facilities by planning, managing, and leading seasonal staff.
- Plan and lead American Red Cross Swim Lessons, Lifeguard Certification, Recertification, and Water Safety Instructor courses.
- Plan and lead lifeguard Emergency Procedure training.
- Develop, organize, and lead aquatic programming including swim meets, special events, and swim lessons.
- Manage the department’s first aid supplies, ensuring all facilities and programs have adequate supplies.
Position Duties
1. Develop, implement, direct, and coordinate recreation programs and activities for all age groups; make recommendations regarding new programs or existing program changes and improvements.
2. Supervise, train, and provide work direction to temporary and seasonal employees; assist and participate in the resolution of disciplinary problems with temporary or seasonal employees and program participants; attend and conduct organizational and instructional staff meetings.
3. Assist in coordinating the daily operation and maintenance of recreational facilities including the distribution of equipment, the coordination of non-City-sponsored events held on park property, and instruction of recreational and athletic classes and clinics.
4. Inspect facilities for assigned work activities to ensure that assigned programs are being properly conducted; that aquatic facilities, grounds, buildings, parks, and other related equipment are being properly maintained; and that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed.
5. Ensure proper collection and maintain accountability for revenues generated by registration and facility use fees; maintain attendance records and assist in the procurement of supplies and equipment.
6. Assist in the creation and implementation of marketing and community outreach for promotion of department services and programs, website content, and social media.
7. Assist in handling citizen inquiries, requests, complaints, and special problems regarding recreation programs and facilities.
8. Provide assistance and educational outreach to local clubs, boards, committees, organizations, and other special interest groups regarding the department’s services and seasonal employment opportunities.
9. Perform other such duties and functions as may be necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in recreation, education, or related field; or any such combination of education, experience, and training as may be acceptable to the hiring authority.
A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in the field is preferred.
Preferred Certifications: CPR, AED, First Aid, Lifeguard Training, Lifeguard Training Instructor, and Water Safety Instructor.
Must be willing and will be required to work a varied schedule including weekends and evening hours on a regular basis depending upon the season and activity.
Must possess or be able to obtain prior to hire a valid driver’s license.
Other Qualifications
Knowledge of recreational programming philosophy, trends, principles, and techniques.
Knowledge of the supplies, equipment, personnel, and organization necessary to conduct a planned program and special events.
Knowledge of general safety practices and procedures as they relate to the proper conduct of programs and activities.
Ability to maintain records, make reports, and keep informed in the recreational field.
Ability to plan, assign, and organize the work of temporary and seasonal employees engaged in the delivery of recreational programs.
Knowledge in the aquatic recreation field.
Knowledge of a variety of recreational and cultural activities suitable for participants of all ages and abilities.
Ability to communicate effectively professionally, both interpersonally and in writing.
Ability to lead and instruct participants of all ages and abilities in a variety of recreational activities.
Ability to work well with others, including City staff, business owners, and the general public.
