Description
The Certified Surgical Technician is responsible for providing direct assistance to surgeons during surgical procedures and ensuring the highest standards of aseptic technique and sterilization. This role plays a key part in maintaining a safe, sterile, and efficient operating room environment while also supporting clinic patient care needs as required.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Surgical Assistance
- Provide safe, efficient, and skilled assistance to the surgeon during surgical procedures.
- Scrub for assigned surgical cases and anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
- Assist with pre- and post-operative preparation, including room setup and turnover.
- Communicate effectively with the circulating nurse regarding any intraoperative issues.
Aseptic Technique & Instrument Sterilization
- Maintain sterile technique at all times in the operating room.
- Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic practices, equipment, instruments, and surgical procedures.
- Clean, maintain, and sterilize surgical instruments and supplies.
- Operate sterilizers and maintain quality control documentation.
Inventory & Supply Management
- Package and stock sterile supplies in sufficient quantities to meet surgery schedules.
- Restock sterile rooms and sink areas, ensuring proper ordering, storage, and rotation of supplies.
- Maintain knowledge of instrument sets and surgical supply requirements.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work collaboratively with surgeons, nurses, and all members of the OR team.
- Participate in orientation and training of new surgical technicians.
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and attend team meetings.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure accurate sponge and sharp counts as needed.
- Adhere to all safety, compliance, and infection control protocols.
- Assist with cleaning and maintaining the operating room before and after procedures.
Additional Duties
- Provide assistance with clinic patient care needs as required.
- Perform other duties as necessary to ensure patient safety and efficient operations.
Requirements
Position Requirements
- Physical and mental ability to walk, stand, push, and pull; may be required to assist with moving patients.
- Potential exposure to blood, body fluids, and other hazardous materials; personal protective equipment must be used as needed.
- Thorough knowledge of operating room technique.
- Strong organizational skills, flexibility, and effective communication skills.
- Ability to assess priorities, maintain a professional image, and manage periods of stress.
