Description
The Publishing Librarian supports the preparation and dissemination of government publications, ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and compliance with federal standards. This role is responsible for formatting, validating, and converting government technical reports for multiple digital formats and ensuring compliance with Section 508 accessibility requirements. The ideal candidate will combine technical publishing expertise with a strong understanding of XML, metadata standards, and digital publishing workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Format OWM reports in Microsoft Word for conversion to XML, HTML, EPUB, and DAISY.
- Ensure all OWM reports are Section 508 compliant.
- Transform Microsoft Word reports to XML and validate XML documents.
- Troubleshoot data conversion issues and collaborate with library personnel to resolve programming or content-related issues.
- Perform quality control checks on converted reports before publication to the Library’s online platforms.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Library/Information Science, Publishing, Data Science, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience working on an online scholarly publication OR at least 5 years of experience with XML.
- Familiarity with online publications, specifically electronic government reports or books.
- Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to work with complex, detailed information.
- Expertise in advanced document formatting using Microsoft Word.
- Proven knowledge of XML, DTD, and other schema languages.
- Experience converting XML documents to multiple output formats.
- Demonstrated knowledge of MathML.
- Familiarity with electronic image formats (e.g., TIFF, GIF, JPEG, EPS, PNG).
Must Have Experience or Knowledge of At Least Two of the Following:
- Experience managing an online publication.
- Experience formatting reports using Adobe InDesign.
- Experience with complex document formatting using LaTeX.
- Experience with digital publishing software such as eXtyles or Typefi.
- Knowledge of NISO Z39.96-2015 JATS.
- Knowledge of NISO Z39.102-2022 STS.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to move from place to place within the location, lifting of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to 35 pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.
- Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
