School Nurse - Substitute
Scope of Role:
Provides direct care to students and staff/faculty members for injuries and acute illness and long-term management of students with special health care needs, facilitates student’s optimal physical and mental growth and development. assists in planning school health programs and serves as resource person in preparing health education curricula.
Major Responsibilities:
- Assessment and treatment within the scope of professional nursing practice.
- Communication with parents/faculty/staff.
- Referral to physicians.
- Developing appropriate nursing care plans for students with chronic conditions.
- Developing emergency action plans to manage potential emergent events in the school setting.
- Student/faculty/staff teaching regarding health issues (allergies and EpiPen use, the care of students with Diabetes etc.).
- Supervision of prescribed nursing care.
- The school health nurse provides leadership for the provision of health services including the promotion of a healthy school environment by monitoring immunizations, ensuring appropriate exclusion for infectious illnesses, and reporting communicable diseases as required by law.
- The school health nurse functions as a liaison among school personnel, family, health care professionals and the community.
- Performs other projects and duties as assigned.
Requirements
Required Qualifications:
· Ability to use clinic/medical equipment; possess basic pharmacological knowledge.
· Ability to assess emergency situations and act accordingly.
· Comfortable knowledge of universal procedures and ability to teach this to others.
· Ability to implement plans for students with chronic health problems and coordinate the administration of medication within state law and Board policies.
· Good oral and written communication skills.
· Basic computer skills.
· Willing attitude to be a part of the school team.
· Strong sense of professionalism.
· Other skills and requirements expected by the Director of Health Safety and Security.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment:
· Must be able to use a computer, copier and other office equipment effectively.
· Mobility sufficient to navigate efficiently and safely within our entire campus, including playgrounds, athletic fields and other environments with uneven ground, if needed.
· Hearing sufficient to hear vocalizations from a distance and speech sufficient to instruct and interact indoors or outdoors with groups of students.
· May be inside or outside and must be able to adapt to weather conditions.
· Environment is quiet to moderately noisy.
Qualifications:
Education:
RN with current NC licensure, BSN preferred.
Experience:
School and/or pediatric experience preferred.
Equivalency:
Directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and experience may be considered.
