About the Department
The Town of East Hartford is seeking a qualified and dedicated professional to serve as Deputy Fire Marshal. Under the general supervision of the Fire Marshal, this senior-level position plays a critical role within the Fire Prevention Bureau. The Deputy Fire Marshal is responsible for enforcing fire safety codes, conducting fire investigations, and leading fire prevention and public education initiatives.
This role demands a high degree of technical knowledge, sound judgment, and leadership ability. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong communication skills and the capacity to collaborate effectively with property owners, public officials, emergency personnel, and the community at large.

Position Duties
Conducts fire safety inspections of new and existing structures across all occupancy types to ensure compliance with state fire safety codes and local ordinances.
• Enforces federal, state, and local regulations governing the storage, handling, and use of flammable and combustible liquids, explosives, and other hazardous materials.
• Provides clear and accurate testimony in legal proceedings related to fire code enforcement and investigations.
• Investigates fire hazard complaints, identifies code violations, and takes corrective action in accordance with applicable fire safety regulations.
• Determines the origin and cause of fires through thorough scene examinations, evidence collection and preservation, documentation, and interviews, ensuring all investigative procedures meet legal standards.
• Assists in firefighting operations during multiple-alarm incidents as needed.
• Promotes fire safety through public education programs and community outreach initiatives.
• Efficiently manages inspection schedules and related activities to maximize productivity and resource use.
• Prepares detailed reports and maintains organized records of inspections, investigations, and related activities in compliance with departmental documentation standards.
• Evaluates the operational readiness of fire protection systems and equipment in buildings and facilities, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards.
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of fire behavior and characteristics.
- Proficient in fire prevention principles and practices.
- In-depth understanding of construction types, classifications, rated components, and common building methods and materials.
- Skilled in reading and interpreting building plans, specifications, and fire protection system designs.
- Capable of identifying existing and potential fire and life safety hazards across diverse structures, occupancies, and installations.
- Experienced in applying federal, state, and local fire codes and ordinances to determine appropriate actions.
- Thorough familiarity with Fire Department rules, regulations, and operational procedures.
- Extensive knowledge of fire prevention, fire behavior, and applicable codes.
- Proven experience in fire investigation and inspection.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to interpret technical documents and communicate findings clearly.
- Strong ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, property owners, and the public.
- Enforce local, state, and federal fire codes and regulations.
- Conduct inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial properties.
- Investigate the origin and cause of fires.
- Promote fire safety through public education and outreach.
- Assist in the development and implementation of fire prevention policies and procedures.
- Provide support during emergency incidents as needed.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly to individuals and groups.
Other Qualifications
- High School Diploma or its equivalent
- Possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
- Current certification as a Fire Marshal and must maintain certification according to C.G.S., Section 29-298, as a condition of employment.
- Must be free of any physical or mental impairment that would prohibit the accomplishment of the essential functions of a Deputy Fire Marshal.
- At least five years of fire service experience.
