About the Department
Are you a skilled and experienced Telecommunicator ready to take the next step in your career? Person County Government is actively recruiting a Communications Division Captain to lead and support our team at the Emergency Communications Division.
As a Communications Division Captain, you'll combine hands-on emergency communications expertise with leadership responsibilities. You’ll supervise a team of dedicated Telecommunicators while also handling both emergency and non-emergency 911 calls, ensuring the safety and service of our community.

The starting salary will be determined with consideration given to both the candidate's educational background and relevant work experience.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record per County policy.
Week 1- Work 2 days- off Monday & Tuesday; work Wed & Thursday; off Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Week 2- Work 5 days- work Monday, Tuesday, off Wednesday & Thursday; work Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Position Duties
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Serves as a supervisor in the Emergency Communications Division
- Trains new staff in departmental policies and procedures and work methods;
- Insures proper certifications and re-certifications for staff;
- Assists with the hiring process including assisting interviewing, references and other activities;
- Provides performance coaching and evaluation for assigned staff, schedules staff and reviews and submits time sheets;
- Assures coverage in emergency situations, makes critical judgment calls concerning emergency dispatch situations, and provides guidance to subordinate and support personnel.
- Serves as TAC coordinator for assigned shifts; assists with maintaining data bases as needed
- Receives and dispatches calls for service to emergency medical services, law enforcement municipal police departments, volunteer and municipal fire departments, highway patrol, Department of Transportation, rescue squads, public utilities, animal control, and various human services agencies, etc.
- Receives complaints and requests for service by telephone or radio;
- Obtains necessary information and dispatches appropriate personnel or officials and/or advises callers of proper contact for assistance or information.
- Performs telecommunicator duties as needed.
- Maintains daily checks on equipment used in the communications center to ensure it is operational.
- Monitors calls of other Telecommunicators to ensure that calls are handled properly, with correct priority and in accordance with standard operating guidelines;
- Takes control of calls when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
Desirable Experience and Education
- Graduation from high school and considerable experience in telecommunications and dispatching and 3-5 years supervisory training preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in the use of computers, mapping software, CAD related software, and have working understanding of spreadsheets, word processing and related software with reasonable speed and accuracy.
Other Qualifications
- Certification as DCI Operator by State of North Carolina
- Certification as a Telecommunicator by the State of North Carolina
- Certification as Emergency Medical Dispatcher
- Certification in NIMS 100, 200, 300, 700,701, 702, 800
- Certification as CTO (Certified Training Officer)
- Required to obtain and maintained CPR.
- Certification in EMD Quality Assurance
- Must report to work at the scheduled time during inclement or adverse weather conditions.
