Position Summary
The Production Manager is responsible for the overall management of our custom metal fabrication shop. This role involves leading the fabrication crew, managing the production schedule, overseeing material and labor resources, and ensuring a safe and efficient work environment. The Production Manager will report to the Head of Production and will be responsible for the full lifecycle of employee management for their team. A key function of this role is to ensure all projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the company's quality standards.
Essential Functions
- Crew Management & Development:
- Directly supervise and lead the metal fabrication crew.
- Serve as the hiring manager for all metal fabrication staff, including recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding new employees.
- Manage performance reviews, disciplinary actions, and professional development plans for the team.
- Promote a positive and collaborative team culture.
- Production & Resource Planning:
- Develop and maintain the production schedule for metal fabrication projects.
- Assist Estimating and Accounts in budgeting for metal-focused projects
- Manage the allocation of both labor and materials to ensure efficient project completion.
- Coordinate with the sales and project management teams to establish realistic project timelines and resource requirements.
- Monitor production workflow and implement improvements to increase efficiency and reduce waste.
- Project Oversight:
- Serve as a project manager on select projects, overseeing them from start to finish.
- Ensure all project milestones are met and that quality control standards are upheld.
- Proactively identify and address potential issues that could impact project timelines, budgets, or quality.
- Installation Site Management:
- Oversee the preparation and staging of fabricated components for off-site installation.
- Coordinate logistics for project delivery and site setup.
- Ensure all necessary tools, equipment, and safety gear are available for the installation crew.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for the installation team and site managers to address any on-site issues.
- Project Management and Client Relations:
- Act as the key point of contact for clients on projects under their direct management.
- Conduct meetings with project stakeholders; create agendas, take detailed notes, and distribute follow-up materials
- Address any concerns or feedback from the client to ensure satisfaction and maintain a positive working relationship.
- Ensure the final product and installation meet the client's specifications and quality expectations.
- Track and manage project finances with internal budget spreadsheets and project reports, source and order materials, coordinate pickups/deliveries, and maintain the bill of materials throughout the course of the project
- Safety Management:
- Develop, implement, and enforce a robust safety management program across OHOH production teams in accordance with company policies and relevant regulations (e.g., OSHA).
- Conduct regular safety meetings and training sessions, in concert with other department leaders.
- Develop and maintain a safety audit system for OHOH production departments
- Perform routine safety audits of the metalshop and equipment to ensure a secure and safe working environment.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Valid Drivers license and Clean drivers record
- Experience:
- Minimum of 12 years of experience in a metal fabrication environment.
- At least 8 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Demonstrated experience in production scheduling, resource management, and project management.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficient in various metal fabrication techniques, including welding, cutting, forming, machining, and finishing.
- Manufacturing process design and implementation
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics.
- Strong knowledge of industry safety standards and best practices.
- Interpersonal Skills:
- Exceptional leadership and team-building abilities.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a focus on client and internal team communication.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
Physical Demands:
- Sitting: A significant portion of the workday may be spent sitting.
- Using hands/fingers: Repetitive tasks like typing, using a mouse, or handling paperwork are common.
- Speaking and Hearing: Communicating with colleagues and possibly clients via phone or in person.
- Near Visual Acuity: Reading and using computer screens require good vision at close distances.
- Driving: As needed for off site activities
- Regular use of PPE for welding, cutting, grinding, and handling materials
- Lifting and Carrying: The ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs is often a requirement. Heavier weights may require the use of proper equipment.
- Standing and Moving: Stand, bend, reach, and walk for extended periods throughout a shift. This can include repetitive motions like twisting and bending.
- Operating Equipment: Proficiency in operating various tools and machinery, including but not limited to welders, plasma cutters, torches, shears, punches, power tools, overhead cranes, and forklifts is often necessary.
- Manual Dexterity and Hand-Eye Coordination: These skills are important for precise tasks like welding, fabrication, and assembly.
- Endurance: The ability to work in a fabrication shop environment, which may involve exposure to noise, welding fumes, grinding sparks, and physically demanding conditions, is also a factor.
