Job Description
DEFINITION:
Under general supervision of the transportation supervisor to drive and attend to a District Automobile, and transport students over designated routes in compliance with assigned schedules, and to do job related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Auto Drivers are qualified to operate District Automobiles, including those containing special features and equipment to assist students accessing school, college programs, athletics, and other events.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:
- Inspects vehicle for mechanical and basic safety compliance prior to operation in accordance with written rules and regulations;
- drives vehicle according to designated routes and ad hoc trips as authorized;
- supervises the conduct of students and other passengers being transported;
- picks up and releases students per policy;
- assists students on and off vehicle and escorts them across street when necessary;
- ensures the safe loading and unloading of passengers to and from destinations;
- maintains district cleanliness levels to interior and exterior of the vehicle and adequate fuel levels;
- prepares and completes required reports;
- performs other tasks as required to safely operate a vehicle in accordance with laws and district policies;
- administers first aid;
- informs transportation supervisor of practices and incidents for follow-up action and/or proper procedures;
- attends department training sessions and safety meetings as required;
- provides a positive climate of customer service in all interactions and communications with passengers, District staff, families, and community members;
- complies with traffic regulations in order to operate vehicles in a safe and courteous manner;
- complies with all current state and federal regulations, including but not limited to, random drug testing and physical screenings;
- performs other job-related tasks/duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
? safe driving practices and techniques;
? basics of first aid;
? provision of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of students;
? meet the physical, mental, and environmental demands of the position.
Ability to:
? drive a District Automobile and other automotive equipment safely and efficiently;
? maintains order among passengers on a school vehicle;
? understand and follow oral and written directions;
? establish and maintain effective working relationships with others including the public;
? perform all duties in a safe and helpful manner so as to not cause a risk to self and others.
Education, Training, and Experience:
? Completion of twelfth grade or equivalent;
? Must maintain knowledge of safe operation of vehicles by attendance at assigned in-service training sessions/seminars.
License Required:
? Valid California Driver’s License
? Insurability by District liability insurance carrier is required;
? Clean driving record with the DMV;
? First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification
? Random drug testing.
