The City of Greensboro is seeking a dedicated Code Enforcement Officer in the Water Resources Department. This role ensures the safe and effective operation of our wastewater collection system by enforcing regulations, conducting inspections, and educating businesses and property owners on proper disposal practices. Compensation and Benefits:

Estimated Hiring Salary Range: $51,828.00. - $59,233.00   Full Salary Range: $45,017.00 - $80,557.00 Annually

About the Role: Ready to Make a Difference? 

The Code Enforcement Officer will oversee the inspection, enforcement, and education of more than 1,500 food service establishments (FSEs), property management firms, and multi-family housing units to ensure compliance with fats, oils, and grease (FOG) disposal requirements. This critical work helps protect the City’s sanitary sewer system from overflows caused by excessive grease buildup.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting inspections, issuing enforcement letters, and providing education to ensure proper FOG disposal practices.

  • Coordinating with Water Resources Operations staff to investigate drainage areas with recurring grease problems.

  • Reviewing building plans and variance applications in partnership with Engineering & Inspections and Guilford County Environmental Health to ensure proper grease trap sizing for new developments.

  • Maintaining and operating a computer database to document inspections, enforcement actions, and educational outreach.

  • Responding to problem areas and taking corrective action to prevent sewer overflows and backups.

  • The job is NON-EXEMPT under FLSA

This position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to balance enforcement with community education.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/G.E.D
  • 1+ years of wastewater collection experience or "related" experience (e.g., inspections, code enforcement, maintenance standards in the water resources or related field, etc.)
  • Valid Driver's license
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology
  • Wastewater Collection Certification Grade 1
