SUMMARY: The Rendering Superintendent is responsible for night shift oversight and leadership required to operate and maintain a 975,000 square foot animal protein production facility which includes a 195,000-pound ammonia system, 32-million-gallon wastewater treatment facility, and a rendering and steam generation operation. Responsible for leading activities which requires the ability to manage through the unpredictability of operational and mechanical rendering issues. Must effectively interface routinely with peers, leadership on the opposite shift, and support groups on the overnight shift.

 

Timely meeting production and shipping requirements within the company's stated quality, cost and yield standards; developing a competent staff of employees through coaching, training and production techniques; providing timely performance reports to Management along with recommendations on all variances; and by following and implementing company policies and performance of contractual and production scheduling requirements. Establish good lines of communication between support departments and plant operations; Encourage good work habits and promote safety.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This list is not intended to be all-inclusive and other duties may be assigned.  

  • Ensure all rendering processes run in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Establish and clearly communicate realistic job requirements for the rendering leadership team and their subordinates; provide frequent feedback and review on performance and accurately appraise performance results against communicated expectations and when necessary, take action to resolve performance or work habit deficiencies. 
  • Monitor and maintain the performance of the rendering equipment, ensure optimal functionality, and minimize downtime. Must have the ability to think ahead, solve problems and bring issues to a sustainable resolution.
  • Enforcing compliance with Government regulations, safety programs, and Company policies procedures and the importance of quality. 
  • Key stakeholder in selection, on-boarding, training, and development of team members engaged in all levels of rendering operations and maintenance.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other departments in the plant in establishing and carrying out responsibilities. 
  • Ensure our culture promotes safety as a top priority, ensure team members are trained on an on-going basis and in compliance with regulations to ensure work is completed in a safe manner and to avoid work related accidents.
  • Inspect products to verify conformance to specifications and directs setup and adjustments of machines. 
  • Recommend measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, quality of product, changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of department, or work crew. 
  • Analyze and resolve work problems and assist leadership team in solving work problems. 
  • Foster an environment of continuous process improvement to drive efficiencies, increased accuracy, and stronger decision making.
  • Maximize production yields; efficiencies and insures adherence to product specifications 
  • Diagnosing and communicating downtime causes and reasons for equipment failure and develop strategies to eliminate through the improvement of reliability and safety of the plant, personnel and production processes. 
  • Establishing and implementing short and long-range organizational goals, objectives, policies and operating procedures 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in a related field (agriculture, animal science or business) plus five to eight years of rendering management experience or the combination of education and experience that enables performance in all aspects of the position.   

 

Proven experience managing compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations (e.g., EPA, OSHA, Clean Water Act).

   

COMMUNICATION SKILLSMust have excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management and employees.  Must have the ability to influence and persuade others.

     

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents in the English language such as safety files, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Must be able to effectively communicate with USDA, production and management personnel.  

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply mathematical applications to practical situations.  

 

REASONING ABILITYAbility to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical, diagram, written and/or verbal form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to use computers and all standard programs used by the industry and the ability to learn and effectively use any and all other computer programs that are or will be made available. Must have experience and be proficient in ASCADA rendering systems. Must have strong organizational skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to move about the facility.  The employee is required to sit; use hands to finger; handle; or feel/hold objects; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; speak; hear taste and smell.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Individuals must be able to effectively work in a normal production environment where temperatures and noise levels may vary, including climate extremes and a loud work environment. Generally, the incumbent may stand and walk for extended periods of time and also must be able to sit and use a computer for extended periods of time.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to cold/hot and/or humid conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, cold/hot temperature and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The work environment includes climate extremes found in all areas of plant operations.  

 

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: The hours and days of work are established as needed by operations and at the discretion of management, may be changed (increased or decreased) by management as required.
