Hybrid Assistant Athletic Director of Recreational Sports and Physical Education at Oklahoma City Public Schools

 
Position Summary:
The Assistant Athletic Director of Recreational Sports and Physical Education is responsible for leading, organizing, and supervising all recreational, co-curricular, and non-varsity athletic programs across Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS). This includes activities not directly supported by Assistant Athletic Directors assigned to middle or high schools, such as speed stacking, esports, band, cheer, pom, and other district-wide student engagement opportunities. The role also provides leadership in the implementation and alignment of district-wide physical education initiatives, supports vertical articulation from elementary to secondary programming, and ensures equitable access and participation across all schools.
 
Essential Duties:
 
Great Teaching & Learning (Instructional Infrastructure):
Focuses on high-quality instruction, curriculum, and student engagement.

• Coordinate and support programming for esports, band, cheer, pom, speed stacking, and other school-based recreational sports and performance groups.
• Facilitate professional learning opportunities and curriculum support for physical education teachers in alignment with Oklahoma Academic Standards.
• Support and contribute to the implementation of the OKCPS District Wellness Policy as aligned with physical education programming and student participation.
• Collaborate with district and school administrators to ensure alignment of programming with OKCPS priorities, goals, and expectations for student engagement.

Focuses on hiring, developing, and retaining effective educators and leaders.

• Provide leadership, oversight, and strategic planning for all district recreational sports and co-curricular activities not managed by Assistant Athletic Directors assigned to schools.
• Facilitate professional learning opportunities for physical education teachers.
• Ability to build relationships and collaborate with staff, families, and community partners (as an essential leadership trait).
• Serve as a liaison to community partners and organizations that support recreational activities and wellness initiatives.

Focuses on fostering a culture of collaboration, equity, and high expectations.

• Serve as the district point of contact and administrator for all non-OSSAA recreational competitions, showcases, and events.
• Partner with the Director of District Athletics and other district departments to build participation pipelines from elementary through high school.
• Support and contribute to the implementation of the District Wellness Policy to create a holistic, health-oriented student experience.
• Collaborate with administrators and staff to ensure programming is inclusive, engaging, and aligned with district values.

Focuses on data systems, compliance, and operational excellence.

• Coordinate logistics for recreational sport competitions and events, including scheduling, transportation, facilities, and staffing.
• Maintain accurate rosters, participation data, and records of student engagement across all grade levels.
• Monitor compliance with district policies and safety procedures for all recreational and co-curricular activities.
• Use digital tools for communication, scheduling, and reporting.
• Strong organizational and project management skills, including event coordination.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

 
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required):

• Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Sport Management, or related field
• Valid Oklahoma teaching certification in Physical Education, Health, or related field
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience in education, coaching, recreational sports, or school leadership
• Strong organizational and project management skills, including event coordination
• Strong knowledge and experience applying OSSAA rules and regulations
• Ability to build relationships and collaborate with staff, families, and community partners
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Proficient in using digital tools for communication, scheduling, and reporting

 
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required):

• Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership or related field

 
Physical/Mental Requirements:   

• Must be able to work in a fast-paced, high-energy environment
• Occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds), bending, and extended periods of standing or sitting
• Work outside of normal business hours, including evenings and weekends, is required
• Must be able to travel within the district using a personal vehicle
• Must have adequate visual acuity to read, interpret and transcribe written material and other required duties.
• Requires normal range of hearing and clear speaking abilities to interact appropriately with others in person and on the telephone, in person, and technology platforms
• Requires some stooping, bending, stretching and occasional lifting not to exceed 25 pounds. 
• May periodically require work outside of normal business hours, including weekends, under sometimes. stressful conditions in order to meet business needs and strict deadlines.

 
Work Environment:

• Primarily office-based with frequent visits to school sites, event venues, and athletic facilities
• May be exposed to loud environments (e.g., gymnasiums, band events, cheer competitions)
