The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill one (1) regular, full-time position in the class of Detention Officer I / II at the Probation department. In addition to this job opportunity, the eligible list that is established as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill vacancies in this class as they become available. The education, experience, and other qualifications of the selected candidate will determine the level at which the position will be offered.  The salary range for each classification level is as follows

Detention Officer I:  $65,228.80 - $79,289.60 Annually
Detention Officer II: $74,796.80 - $90,916.80 Annually

THE POSITION
The position exists with the Yolo County Probation Department and will be assigned to work at the Juvenile Detention Facility which is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week and requires employees to work a variety of shifts. 
 
This is a peace officer classification under Section 830.5 of the California Penal Code. Under direct supervision, and in accordance with guidelines and procedures, incumbents are responsible for the supervision, custodial care, and limited counseling of a group of youth or adults placed under the jurisdiction of the County Probation Officer. Staff assignments can be made to the Juvenile Detention Facility, the Work Program, and/or the Transportation Division.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


DETENTION OFFICER I

Age:  At least 20 years of age. 

Education:  Completion of 30 semester units or 45 quarter units of college with major coursework in the behavioral sciences; OR

Experience: One year of full-time experience in a related field supervising, observing, and assessing youth, preferable in a security setting.

Special Requirements: Within the first year of employment in this classification, incumbents must successfully complete the Juvenile Corrections Officer Core Course provided by the CA Board of State and Community Correction - Standards and Training for Corrections Program, and thereafter successfully complete required annual certified updated courses. Candidates may waive all or part of the required training if they enter this class having already completed the Juvenile Corrections Officer Core Course.  

Detention Officers are required to attend training as prescribed by the Department and/or legally mandated for Management of Assaultive Behavior, First Aid/CPR, Chemical Agents, and Firearms.

Detention Officers assigned to the Work Program/Transportation Division shall meet the training requirements and quarterly qualifications set forth in the California Penal Code and overseen by the Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Program for firearms.


DETENTION OFFICER II

Age:  At least 20 years of age.

Education: Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units of college with major coursework  in the behavioral sciences; AND  

Experience: One year of regular, full-time experience as a Detention Officer I in Yolo County, or an equivalent position in another County Juvenile Detention Facility or State Youth Authority Agency. (Related experience may be substituted for the required college education on a year-for-year basis); AND 

Certificate: Possession of the Juvenile Corrections Officer Core Course provided by the CA Board of State and Community Correction - Standards and Training for Corrections Program.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR LEVEL I AND II

License: Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver's license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation. In addition, incumbents must meet the qualifications for the Class B California driver's license when required by the job assignment.


Background Requirements Incumbents in this classification are designated as peace officers in accordance with Section 830.5 of the California Penal Code. As such, the applicant must meet the standards stipulated in Sections 1029-1031.5 of the Government Code, which include the following:


  • Except under special circumstances, shall not have been convicted of a felony in this state or federal jurisdiction, or of any offense in any state or in any federal jurisdiction which would have been a felony if committed in this state. (Section 1029, California Government Code).

  • Shall have good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation. (Section 1031, California Government Code).

  • Through examination by a medical and psychiatric professional, found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of powers of a peace officer. (Section 1031, California Government Code).

  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. (Section 1031, California Government Code).

Written Exam
All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to the written examination. This examination may test for, but is not limited to, the essential knowledge and abilities listed in this job announcement.  Qualified applicants will be notified of the exact date, time, and location of the examination to the email address included in the application.  All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email.  Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order.  The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination, in conjunction with any county or veteran's preference points.

Verification of Education
Acceptable forms of educational documentation are official or unofficial transcripts that list the student's name, institution name, field of study and date the degree was awarded.

For recent graduates who have not received proof of their degree yet, a letter from the registrar's office stating that all requirements for graduation have been met and listing the field of study will be sufficient proof of graduation.

All foreign transcripts or diplomas must be in English. If the institution does not provide these documents in English, the applicant will need to provide a translation which has been done by a professional agency. The County of Yolo will accept education as equivalent to U.S. accreditation from Institutions that are listed as members of the International Association of Universities.  Applicants who possess a degree or completed coursework that is not from an accredited college or university, must submit one of the following:
 
1. A written statement from a U.S. accredited university or college that states that the applicant is qualified for entrance to a program of graduate studies for which a degree in a related field is required.
 
2. An evaluation of the applicant's degree and coursework equivalency by a private organization that provides foreign credential evaluation services. The evaluation must include a comparison of comparable U.S. courses for content, credit and grade.
 
Note: Foreign language documents must include a precise word-for-word English translation of all foreign language documents. It is the responsibility of each applicant to prove to the satisfaction of the County that the applicant meets the specific requirements listed on the job announcement for each specific examination.
