About the Department
The Treatment Plant Shift Operator position performs the supervisory duties and skilled work involved in the operation of a Metro Water Services potable water or wastewater reclamation facility in compliance with federal and state environmental regulations.
These positions are considered shift work.
Employees at Metro Water Services work around the clock to supply, treat, manage, and protect our water resources in a sustainable manner for the benefit of all who live, work and play in our community. Our dedicated, diverse workforce provides high quality drinking water and the best in wastewater treatment, storm water management, and waste collection services for our customers in the Nashville-Davidson County area. Our employees work together to service more than 210,000 water and 216,000 sewer accounts along with over 150,000 curbside waste collection customers. We are looking for highly engaged individuals to join our team.
Position Duties
- Manages, monitors, and operates the facility during assigned shift to meet all NPDES permits, SWPPP and other applicable requirements.
- Collects and transports regulatory samples to the MWS Laboratory. Samples include bacteriological, effluent composite, and influent samples.
- Supervises and leads treatment plant technicians providing performance evaluations, coaching, mentoring and feedback.
- Ensures treatment plant technicians adhere to all applicable regulations, policies, procedures and standards.
- Collects and analyzes process control samples, making proper plant adjustments.
- Operates an assigned Metro vehicle to deliver samples and pickup supplies from MWS Stores.
- Completes required operational documentation such as operation logs, test results, etc.
- Communicates operational and other issues to supervisors and managers.
- Teaches and trains plant technicians to increase understanding of plant operations and treatment processes.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma and three (3) years of experience in the daily operation of a water/wastewater treatment plant, including one (1) year of experience leading or supervising in the operation and maintenance of a water/wastewater treatment plant.
*Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience on a 1:1 ratio.*
LICENSES REQUIRED
Valid Driver License
Tennessee Water/Wastewater Operator's Certification of Competency - Grade IV for treatment plant operations or equivalent certification from any state.
NOTE: Any employee appointed to this classification shall obtain the TN Grade IV Certification within six (6) months from the effective date of their appointment.
Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.
Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

- Knowledge of federal and state regulations and standards regarding proper treatment plant operations
