Additional Information: Show/Hide Norwich Free Academy (NFA) is accepting applications for the position of In-School Suspension Coordinator. This part-time, short-term fill-in position is expected to run for approximately two months and will follow the regular school day schedule. The role is responsible for overseeing the in-school suspension program by supervising students and ensuring they complete class assignments while addressing behavioral issues. The ISS Coordinator works closely with administrators and teachers to support student success and maintain a positive school climate. Candidates should demonstrate experience working with students, especially in educational or behavioral support roles, with strong interpersonal and organizational skills. An associate’s or bachelor’s degree is preferred. Bilingual abilities (English/Spanish or English/Creole) are highly desirable.
Terms of Employment: Part-time, short-term position for approximately two months, following the regular school day schedule, paid hourly at $23 per hour.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience working with students in a school setting or in youth behavioral support strongly preferred.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive rapport with adolescents.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail for managing schedules, assignments, and record-keeping.
Ability to remain patient, fair, and calm when dealing with disciplinary situations or challenging behaviors.
Familiarity with behavior management techniques and restorative practices is a plus.
Basic proficiency with computers and electronic recordkeeping/communication tools.
Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and support staff.
Performance Responsibilities:
Supervise and monitor students assigned to the In-School Suspension room, maintaining a safe, respectful, and orderly environment conducive to learning and reflection.
Coordinate with teachers to collect class assignments, projects, and tests for students serving ISS; ensure students have the necessary materials to continue their academic work.
Assist students academically by clarifying instructions, answering questions, and providing guidance on classwork; administer tests or quizzes in the ISS setting as required and return completed work to teachers in a timely manner.
Enforce discipline policies consistently by following NFA’s established ISS guidelines and school behavior code.
Implement behavior interventions such as reflection activities or restorative conversations to help students understand the impact of their actions and develop better decision-making skills.
Maintain accurate records for each student in ISS, including dates of assignment, duration, reason for ISS, work completed, and notes on student behavior or progress. Document all relevant information in the electronic ISS log or designated system.
Communicate with school personnel regarding student progress and concerns – for example, inform teachers about student work completion, and alert counselors or administrators to any significant
Collaborate with support teams (House Principals, counselors, social workers, etc.) to address any underlying academic or personal issues affecting students’ behavior, and assist in planning for the student’s successful return to the regular classroom.
Attend meetings and trainings as required, including staff meetings, professional development sessions, or training related to student behavior management, to stay informed about school policies and best practices.
Promote a positive climate by treating all students with dignity and respect, recognizing improvements in behavior, and reinforcing school expectations even while students are in suspension.
Perform other duties as assigned by the House Principal or NFA administration, in support of student supervision and school operations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrates strong behavior management knowledge, including an understanding of effective strategies for working with adolescents who exhibit behavioral issues and knowledge of de-escalation techniques and restorative practices for conflict resolution.
Possesses excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and rapport with students while maintaining authority and communicating clearly and empathetically with students, parents when necessary, and staff.
Shows strong organization and dependability with the capacity to manage multiple tasks such as coordinating assignments from teachers, supervising several students at once, and keeping thorough records.
Maintains reliability, attention to detail, and consistent follow-up on assignments and documentation.
Demonstrates adaptability, including the ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in high-pressure or unexpected situations and to adjust approaches based on individual student needs and behavioral circumstances.
Works collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and support staff to ensure student success, follows directives, and provides constructive feedback on the ISS program’s operation.
Possesses technical proficiency including basic computer skills for email, word processing, and using student information systems or online learning platforms, as well as the ability to maintain confidentiality and manage electronic records in accordance with privacy guidelines.
Additional Working Conditions:
Work is primarily performed on campus in an ISS classroom or designated office setting.
Frequent interaction with students who may be emotionally upset or exhibiting disruptive behavior; the role requires patience, emotional resilience, and the ability to maintain a calm, professional demeanor under stress.
Regular use of standard office and classroom equipment (computer, telephone, copier, etc.) is expected for communication and documentation tasks.
The schedule generally follows the school day/calendar. Occasional flexibility may be required for meetings or training that occur outside regular school hours (e.g., before/after school professional development).
Physical requirements include the ability to sit, stand, and move around for extended periods while supervising students. Occasional light lifting of materials (up to 20 pounds) may be needed (e.g., carrying textbooks or equipment).
