We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as a Permit Technician working with the City of Yuma Department of Community Development – Building Safety Division.  The ideal candidate will perform a variety of customer service and clerical duties as related to a construction environment.

Under basic supervision, this job classification provides customer services for the Building Safety Division of the Department of Community Development (DCD); tracks and processes construction plans and technical documents.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provides basic information to building professionals and the public on DCD application, procedures, and fee structure for permits and licenses; tracks and processes construction plans and technical documents.
  • Reviews permit applications and plan submittals for compliance to DCD standards; verifies proper fee payments are included; updates computer tracking database and case files, and generates reports.
  • Provides customer service; calculates fees and estimates, and collects payments; balances cash drawer, and prepares cash reports and deposits; issues permits within scope of authority.
  • Schedules and tracks field inspections in the computer software system.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the “Yuma Way”, and complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines 
High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND two years clerical and computer experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.  Clerical experience in a construction environment is preferred.

Knowledge of: 

  • City policies and procedures.
  • Federal, state, and local building, construction, and safety codes, regulations and ordinances.
  • Bookkeeping and cash handling methods and procedures.

Skill in:

  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.
  • Providing effective customer service, and dealing tactfully and courteously with the public.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 
A valid Arizona State Driver's License is required.  International Code Conference (ICC) Permit Technician Certification is required within one year of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office environment; may occasionally be required to bend, reach, stoop, and lift objects.
