Job Description
Under general direction from the Associate Director, First Year Experience, the Assistant Director of First Year Formation & Engagement will support the successful execution of multiple formational programs managed by the Office of First Year Experience. Such programs include University Orientation for incoming undergraduates and their families, First Year Academic Convocation, the 48 hours retreat program, and Compass-a mentoring program for first year AHANA+ students.
The Office of First Year Experience is responsible for communicating the Jesuit, Catholic identity of Boston College and introducing incoming students and families to BC’s distinctive tradition of formative education. Thus, the office offers programs designed to welcome students into the University in a way that begins to engage them in its formational goals. To this end, the Assistant Director of First Year Formation & Engagement will be responsible for implementing and executing a new, dynamic, year-long email and program initiative that will reach the entire first-year population (freshmen and transfer students). This initiative will serve as the foundation of an intentional first-year curriculum and will include original video content, curated information and advice, and featured program invitations.
Salary Range: $65,550 to $81,950; salary commensurate with relative experience.Requirements
- The Assistant Director must understand the unique nature of a student’s transition into the life of the University as it exists at Boston College.
- The AD should understand the vital role that strong role models and mentors serve in the programming offered by the office and must be able to recognize and cultivate effective student leadership. The heavily administrative aspect of the programming offered by the office requires that this person is able to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, solve problems, think creatively, and communicate clearly.
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Higher Education, Developmental Psychology, Counseling or a related field highly preferred. Master's degree in Psychology, Counseling, Higher Education, or related field.
- Minimum three years of experience working with students on issues of student formation, counseling or related fields.
- Ability to think creatively about student programming and effectively execute this programming.
- Expertise in multicultural-student leadership and programming.
- Ability to effectively mentor students from diverse populations.
- Ability to foster collaborative relationships with individuals representing other University departments.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated high-level organizational and supervisory skills.
- Knowledge and commitment to the Catholic and Jesuit mission of Boston College.
- Ability to work extended hours and weekends during summer and academic year.
Preferred:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Filemaker Pro and Adobe Photoshop.
