About the Department
The program goal for the Gardena Juvenile Justice and Intervention Program (GJJIP) is to reduce the recidivism rate of youth cited for minor crimes and to intervene with the City's at-risk population in hopes of reducing the likelihood that the youth will continue down a path of repeated involvement with the criminal justice system.
Under the general direction of the Program Administrator, the Case Management Supervisor will perform a full range of supervisory, administrative, technical, and analytical duties including but not limited to the supervision of social work students as an internship field instructor. The candidate must have some experience supervising case work.
Position Duties
Representative Duties
- Supervises and trains caseworkers in evidence-based practices, assessments, and general case management duties.
- Assigns cases, reviews and evaluates the performance of caseworkers, and approves all pertinent documentation including but not limited to case notes, summaries, and service plans.
- Provides critical feedback and information on legal parameters to caseworkers on agency requirements such as mandated reporting, confidentiality, policies and procedures.
- Maintains a minor caseload of one (1) or two (2) youth at any given time, and lends continual oversight of and support to case workers regarding case continuation and disposition decisions, and otherwise fills the role of a caseworker should there be a disruption in availability of caseworkers.
- Serves as an internship field instructor; liaising between the City of Gardena and other stakeholders.
- Other duties as assigned.
- This position involves interacting with youth, community stakeholders, and travel to various community functions.
- Work is performed in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions. Office work requires sitting for prolonged periods of time using a computer, keyboard and screen.
- Must have and maintain a valid California Driver's License.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Graduate of a CSWE-certified Master of Social Work (MSW) program.
- At least three (3) years of experience providing case management or similar services.
- Experience working with youth and/or the criminal justice system is preferred.
- Some supervisory experience preferred.
- Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.
- Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) is desirable
This position is subject to an extensive background investigation and will require a complete pre-employment physical including a drug screening.
Knowledge and Abilities
Ability to train caseworkers in evidence-based practices such as motivational interviewing and brief solutions-focused counseling sessions; should understand case problem identification strategies and help facilitate caseworkers in developing and implementing solutions to such problems as they may arise; must have knowledge of youth development and psychology and be able to assimilate factors potentially affecting youth delinquency; should have an understanding of both brief and comprehensive assessment techniques related to the at-risk youth community; knowledge of case management processes, methods, and objectives; understand ethical principles related to case management and working with youth is required; capable of locating and making referrals based on problems presented by youth and their families; ability to work with and train interns on case management techniques and practices; must be proficient with social media; and must understand the grant writing process.
Skills
Experience and/or aptitude in learning the operation of a variety of office equipment including but not limited to tape transcription machines, personal computer, word processor, micro-fiche, and calculator.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Work is performed in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions. Office work requires sitting for prolonged periods of time and using a computer, keyboard and screen. Physical demands include standing, kneeling, bending, twisting, reaching and grasping in the performance of duties.
License
Must have and maintain a valid Class C California Driver's License.
