Job Summary:  

The 911 Communication Operator/Dispatcher I performs operational duties required in dispatching law enforcement personnel and equipment. The 911 Communication Operator/Dispatcher I answers 911 emergency and non-emergency calls and are required to work a variety of schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays to maintain communication operations.

Minimum Job Requirements: 

  1. High School diploma or General Education Degree.
  2. A valid Texas driver’s license.
  3. Must be able to type a minimum of 20 words per minute.
  4. At least 1 year of experience in a customer service role.

Essential Job Functions:

  • The 911 Communication Operator/Dispatcher I is the entry-level position. 
  • Serves as the first responder for emergency and non-emergency calls, coordinating incidents and relaying information to Police, Fire, and other public safety entities.
    • Dispatches and communicates with Police and Fire personnel via radio, mobile data terminals, and other methods.
    • Provides procedural and safety instructions to callers while awaiting emergency response.
    • Monitors field unit activity through CAD, T.L.E.T.S., and radio, maintaining unit status and location.
    • Supports Police services by accessing local, state, and federal criminal information databases.
  • Maintains communication records in line with Department policies.
  • Enters, updates, and retrieves information on wanted persons, stolen property, vehicles, and related data from state and national networks.
  • Performs clerical duties, including correspondence, filing, record-keeping, and maintaining public safety logs. Also, manages warrant requests, verifies and files warrants, and documents vehicle impoundments and criminal histories.
  • Activates the Emergency Siren System when necessary, following policy.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge of:

  • City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
  • Local, state, and federal codes and ordinances and laws regarding public safety.  
  • Public safety classification codes and computer commands; Knowledge of terminology and procedures used in police, fire, and related emergency radio and telephone communications.
  • Principles and practices of effective customer service.
  • Geographic features and streets within the City of Balch Springs.

  • Following verbal and written instructions, including orders in a chain of command.  
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.

  • Operating a personal computer and various software programs.  
  • Maintaining confidentiality and integrity while handling sensitive matters.

  

Physical Demands/Work Environment:  

Work is performed in a confined office environment with low to moderate noise level and low light level.  Subject to sitting for an extended period of time, standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, and lifting and putting away such items as records and office supplies of moderate weight of up to 40 pounds.  Working with a wide variety of people.
