The School Nurse serves as a key advocate for student and staff health within the school setting. This position is responsible for promoting and protecting the optimal health and well-being of students, identifying and addressing health concerns, and supporting a safe school environment. The ideal candidate is a skilled clinician, attentive listener, and proactive communicator who can respond to both physical and emotional needs with care and professionalism.
Essential Functions:
Provide direct nursing care to students and staff in accordance with professional standards, district policies, and Georgia state laws.
Assess and manage acute and chronic health conditions, including implementing individualized healtcare plans
Administer medications, treatments, and emergency care as needed
Maintain accurate, confidential student health records and documentation in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations
Identify health-related trends and needs within the school population and collaborate with staff and families to address concerns
Observe students and staff for signs of illness, injury, or emotional distress and respond appropriately
Communicate effectively and compassionately with students, families, and school personnel
Maintains accurate records and documentation in accordance with state and federal law, and Board of Education policies.
Follow and enforce all Georgia health laws and school procedures related to communicable diseases, immunizations, and medication administration.
Ensure the maintenance and readiness of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and oversee emergency health procedures and drills.
Monitor and order medical supplies to ensure the clinic is well-stocked and operational.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of the school clinic
Serve as a resource and advocate for health education and wellness initiatives within the school community
Collaborate with school administration, counselors, and external healthcare providers to support the holistic well-being of students
Assist with general office procedures in the main school office as needed, including providing support during high traffic times or staff absences.
Provides medical assessment to school district employees as requested.
Notifies parent's of student’s injury/illness
Additional Duties:
Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisors or other administrators.

Equipment:
Uses medical equipment to provide health care to students/staff, including, but not limited to, stethoscopes, thermometers, and sphygmomanometers.
Uses personal computers.
Safety Requirements:
Adheres to all applicable professional safety standards and practices in the nursing field, including requirements set forth in federal and state law, and Occupational Safety and Health regulations.
Implements training of staff regarding Blood Borne Pathogens, CPR, and minor first aid procedures
Qualifications Profile:
Any combination of education, licenses, certifications and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or related science area, with coursework in growth and development, health assessment, public or school health, crisis intervention and health education.
Master’s degree in related field preferred.
Must meet the qualifications of a school nurse as defined in state regulations.
Successful experiences working with pediatric population, preferably in a community or school setting desirable.
License or Certificate:
Registered professional nurse, designated as R.N. as defined and determined by state law, and currently licensed in the state.
Current certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
