Duties

Work as a phlebotomy technician, obtaining venous and capillary blood specimens from adults and children using phlebotomy material selection (i.e. vacutainer, syringe, butterfly, and lancet) and urine specimen collection.,Ensure proper readings for whole blood coagulation instrument through daily quality control measures on the equipment.,Perform glucose and lactose tolerance testing by administering pretest substances, drawing blood at specific time intervals, testing urine for presence and quantity of sugars, and recording urine test results.,Collect and dispose of biohazard materials according to standards and procedures established by regulatory agencies.,Perform accessioning procedures either manually or by use of a computer terminal.,Distribute specimens to one of the laboratory sections responsible for performing the test.,File results of completed laboratory test and ensure test reports are faxed to outside providers as required.,Train employees (laboratory, nursing staff and medical laboratory technician students) on venipuncture, capillary puncture, bleeding times, etc.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience performing phlebotomy duties which includes verifying proper patient preparation and tests requested, collecting blood samples from patients using proper material selection (i.e. vacutainer, syringe, butterfly, and/or lancet), and preparing collected specimens for delivery to the laboratory for testing. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, such as Medical Laboratory Science or Health Sciences. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
