Additional Information: Show/Hide Job Summary The School Maintenance Director is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and operation of all school district facilities, grounds, and equipment. This position ensures a safe, clean, and functional learning environment for students and staff by assisting with the management of maintenance staff, coordinating repairs, and implementing preventative maintenance programs. The director works closely with school administration to plan and budget for facility needs.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Oversee daily maintenance operations, ensuring timely completion of repairs and facility upkeep.
Supervise and coordinate the activities of maintenance, custodial, and groundskeeping staff.
Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and structural systems.
Manage maintenance requests from staff and prioritize tasks accordingly.
Ensure compliance with safety regulations, building codes, and environmental requirements.
Maintain records of repairs, inspections, and maintenance activities.
Oversee the procurement and inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment.
Develop and manage the maintenance department budget, including cost estimation for repairs and projects.
Collaborate with school administrators to plan for facility improvements and capital projects.
Coordinate with external contractors and vendors for specialized maintenance work, major repairs, and capital projects.
Respond to emergency maintenance situations promptly to minimize disruptions to school operations.
Train and support maintenance/custodial staff in best practices and safety procedures.
Conduct regular inspections of school buildings, grounds, and equipment to identify and address maintenance needs.
Snow removal from all sidewalks and entrances.
Operate BAS system for HVAC controls.
Open the building daily and check systems for proper functioning.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Facility Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
Minimum of five years of experience in facility maintenance with at least two years in a supervisory role is highly preferred.
Must have the ability to work independently.
Strong knowledge of building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and structural components.
Familiarity with OSHA regulations, building codes, and safety procedures.
Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and maintenance manuals.
Strong leadership and communication skills to actively oversee staff and collaborate with school administrators.
Budgeting and project management experience preferred.
Proficiency in using maintenance management software and standard office applications.
Valid driver's license and ability to respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments.
Requires physical activity, including lifting (up to 50lbs.), climbing, standing, bending, stooping, crawling into tight spaces, and operating maintenance equipment.
Ability to operate a scissor lift and work at heights (up to 25 feet).
Skills to use a wide range of power tools.
May require occasional evening or weekend work for emergency repairs or special projects.
On call for alarms and building emergencies.
Salary and Benefits This is a salary position. Salary and benefits are regionally competitive and commensurate with experience and education (Range $70,000-$86,000). Paid sick days, personal leave, and vacation days. Medical, dental, and life insurance are available. IMRF pension plan.
Reports to The Director of Maintenance will report directly to the Superintendent or designee
