Patrol Dispatcher

General Purpose:
 

The Patrol Dispatcher is the main hub of communication across the mountain. Dispatcher logs and tracks Patrol missions, injuries, trail conditions, and other on-mountain communications. 


This is a seasonal position from November 2025 to April 2026. Dates are subject to change based on the availability of the applicant and needs of the business. Hiring for our seasonal positions occurs on a rolling basis. This position will remain open until filled.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:  

 

Dispatcher duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Receive and analyze incoming mountain calls and non-emergent messages from other departments at Purgatory.
  • Utilize computer aided dispatch system to input, retrieve, and maintain vital information
  • Performing emergency medical dispatch when necessary
  • Distribute calls for service via internal radio system
  • Initiate incident reports of on mountain injuries and maintain history records
  • Maintain radio log and recording
  • Coordinate with outside organizations including, Durango 911 Dispatch, Montrose 911 Dispatch, Durango Fire Protection District (DFPD), La Plata County Search and Rescue (LPCSAR), San Juan Medical Rescue and SAR (SJMR), Flight for Life (FFL), and other regional utilized organizations.
  • Monitor all Mountain channels and communicate data to Patrol staff and other mountain departments as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

 

Qualified applicants should be passionate about learning about and working in the Public Safety/Emergency Services.  Must have the ability to remain calm and professional in a variety of situations. In addition, they must meet the following qualifications:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task successfully in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
  • Strong computer and typing skills
  • Must be able to pass a basic ski/snowboard test
  • Available to work different schedules, including weekends and holidays

Alertness, precision, ingenuity, problem-solving, analytic ability, spatial perception, persuasiveness, memory, creativity, concentration, judgment, aesthetic sense, reasoning, imagination, initiative, patience, visual, tactile and auditory discrimination, strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary abilities. Good organizational skills required.


 

Education and Experience: 

 

  • Current CPR/AED
  • Additional Basic First Aid knowledge preferred.
  • Prior experience with dispatching, radio operations and/or computer systems preferred
  • Prior experience working at a ski resort or similar preferred


 

Working Environment/Physical Activities:

 

Material and Equipment Directly Used:

Dispatch Base station, handheld radios, Dispatch computer software, medical care equipment, and simple office equipment

 Working Environment/Physical Activities:

95% of the work day is spent indoors at Dispatch Station maintaining intermountain and Patrol communications, answering phones, radios, emails. 5% time spent outside in the elements riding chairlift or snowmobile to/from Duty station or skiing down at end of shift.
