- Utilizes all aspects of the Incident Command System at scene of emergency, including delivering and/or following orders as the Incident Command System requires.
- Supervises and directs operation of equipment under his/her direct command including but not limited to: general laddering of buildings, making necessary preparations with hose lines for aerial guns, ventilation of buildings and forcible entry.
- Supervises the replacement of all equipment for return to fire station.
- Supervises the inspection and cleaning of firefighting equipment under his/her command.
- Assists in supervision of all station housework and replacement of equipment.
- Conducts all company drills.
- Prepares and submits reports and forms regarding alarms and fire prevention.
- Prepares requisitions for materials and equipment to be used on equipment under his/her control.
- Prepares daily reports of all activities during his/her assigned shift.
- Keeps posted on road conditions, routes to fires and hydrant locations.
- Performs fire prevention inspection and makes necessary reports for the Fire Marshal and/or Deputy Fire Marshal.
- Remains on stand-by for all fires and emergencies except on days off and vacation.
- May be assigned durational administrative or operational projects
- Participates in the advisory role for the development of policy for the department
- If operating as a promoted paramedic, subject to assignment in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement
- May be voluntarily assigned to a supervisory role in the Training and Support Services Division
- In the absence of a Captain, may serve as the executive officer of a working shift
- Other duties as assigned.
- Complete knowledge of the street system and physical layout of West Hartford, including hydrant locations.
- Knowledge of firefighting strategy and tactics.
- Complete knowledge of common causes of fire and adequate knowledge of salvage procedures.
- Knowledge of the State of Connecticut Fire Safety Code sufficient to perform fire prevention inspections.
- Ability to develop skill in firefighting and emergency work, use of firefighting and other lifesaving equipment within a reasonable test period.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with superiors, co-workers and other Town employees.
- Knowledge of hydraulics and current fire prevention procedures.
- Ability to lead and supervise personnel effectively, maintain discipline and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to prepare and maintain required reports and records.
- Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
- Ability to perform the essential job functions in the work environment as previously described.

ELIGIBILITY
As of September 14, 2025, an applicant must have no less than four (4) years of employment as a firefighter of the Town of West Hartford Fire Department. Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for this position as of September 14, 2025
JOB PURPOSE
Work consists of supervising subordinate employees in the areas of firefighting, station and administrative duties. Employees in this classification are expected to perform manual firefighting work in addition to actively participating in station, administrative and other miscellaneous duties as outlined in the Fire Lieutenant job specifications.WORK ENVIRONMENT
Hazards to personal safety may arise from personal, mechanical and natural conditions and include possible loss of life. Employees in this classification are required to perform their duties under all conditions of weather and participate in the manual labor of firefighting.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
As of September 14, 2025, the employee will have graduated from a high school or its equivalent, and no less than four (4) years of experience as a firefighter and or firefighter/apparatus operator combination in the West Hartford Fire Department.METHOD OF SELECTION

Candidates must achieve a passing grade of 70% on the written examination in order to be invited to participate in the oral board examination. Candidates who successfully pass the oral board examination with a score of at least 70% will have their names placed on the Eligible List in accordance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the Town of West Hartford Personnel Rules.
No candidate will be promoted to this position, however, if they fail to satisfy all physical requirements for the position which would prevent them from performing the essential functions of the job with or without accommodation, and as determined by the Fire Chief and a physician selected by the Director of Human Resources. Any employee promoted as a result of this examination must satisfactorily complete a six (6) month probationary period before the promotion will be considered permanent.
Written Examination to be held September 3, 2025. The Oral Boards will be held September 8, 2025, through September 11, 2025.
