This position will require frequent travel and reliable transportation, this position is not for a live on dredge. Employees are provided with per diem to cover their own lodging expense. This position requires experience in dredging, in the engine room.

The Shift Engineer is responsible for the care and maintenance of the engine room, tools, and machinery on the dredge and assisting the chief.  They are also responsible for the care and maintenance of any other equipment on the job and performing the duties prescribed by the chief, captain, and deck captain.

 Essential functions (This is not all-inclusive)

  • Upholds the Company’s commitment to an injury-free workplace; leads and models safe work practices 
  • Follows all safety rules and regulations as well as all company policies and procedures 
  • Works safely around machinery; observes and instructs others in proper equipment use; uses/wears all required PPE
  • Inspects dredge and engine room every hour on the hour, logs readings and findings in engine room log, and reports any abnormal findings to the chief and captain
  • Inspects bilges and pump holes every hour as well as inspecting void tanks every 6 hours
  • Makes rounds every hour to record engine readings
  • Takes fuel soundings every 6 hours with water paste
  • Takes weekly inventory of filters, supplies, and spare parts
  • Monitors and maintains all fluid levels on the dredge in day tanks, fuel tanks, engines gearboxes, and cooler
  • Switches fuel valves as needed to keep dredge level
  • Maintains a log to record what is removed from the pump each time the pump is cleaned
  • Logs hourly readings on booster pump and calculates daily fuel usage
  • Reports issues and corrects deficiencies on the booster pump
  • Inspects all safety equipment aboard the dredge at each shift
  • Inspects and logs all parts, supplies, and materials brought to the dredge
  • Makes repairs to dredge and consults with chief or captain before making repairs that will require a shutdown
  • Assists chief and outside mechanic with repairs as needed
  • Changes oil filters, fuel filters, and air filters
  • Maintains maintenance records and records of all repairs
  • Greases shives, spuds, ladders, winches, and pumps.  Takes oil samples on the 1st of every month on all engines in the fleet

 Minimum Qualifications

  • High School degree or equivalent
  • Three (3) or more years of experience as a Shift Engineer
  • Excellent safety and mechanical skills
  • Ability to meet physical requirements of the position as outlined in the Functional Job Description
  • Must be able to successfully pass all pre-employment testing (drug test, fit test) in addition to random drug and alcohol testing
  • Must be authorized to work in the US. This position is not eligible for a work VISA sponsorship.
