Summary: The Controller leads and directs all accounting operations for Peddler’s Village, encompassing a real estate entity and five distinct hospitality operations. This role ensures full compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry (USALI), overseeing financial reporting, audit readiness, internal controls, and team leadership. The Controller is a key strategic partner responsible for upholding financial integrity, legal compliance, and operational excellence. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

 Financial Reporting

  • Responsible for all accounting-related activities required to produce monthly financial statements, adhering to GAAP.
  • Ensure that the balance sheet fairly reflects the assets and liabilities of Peddler’s Village, including all subsidiary entities. Review the balance sheet monthly and perform reconciliations of all accounts in accordance with GAAP.
  • Oversee all journal entries recorded in the accounting system, ensuring compliance with GAAP and appropriate supporting documentation.
  • Maintain a focused system of internal controls to ensure effective and efficient oversight of assets, liabilities, revenue, and costs, in compliance with company policy.
  • Prepare all profit and loss statements using Sage Intacct, based on GAAP and USALI standards.
  • Review all general ledger accounts for all entities to ensure accuracy.
  • Record monthly interest on financed assets (e.g., vehicles).
  • Amortize lease incentives as appropriate.
  • Emphasize revenue assurance by utilizing a monthly control checklist and conducting interim self-audits as needed.
  • Ensure that corporate reporting is timely, accurate, and internally consistent. Verify that management reports, operational trend reports, incremental conversion reports, profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports reconcile with the trial balance. Maintain documentation of monthly reconciliations.
  • Safeguard the integrity of data flowing into the accounting system, ensuring robust controls over systems that interface with the accounting platform.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to correct errors at the source and amend processes to prevent recurring issues.
  • Maintain records of management and administrative fees for each operation.
  • Compile consolidated profit and loss statements on a monthly basis.
  • Maintain the integrity of the chart of accounts based on GAAP and USALI 11th and 12th Editions.
  • Create and link new accounts in alignment with USALI 11th and 12th Editions.
  • Ensure full legal and tax compliance, including timely and accurate filing for Sales, Occupancy, and Use Tax, as applicable. Ensure that adequate accounting, actuarial, and legal controls are in place.
  • Confirm that valid permits and licenses are obtained for all applicable operations (e.g., importation, currency transfers, bars, restaurants, amusement parks).
  • Ensure sufficient liquidity is available to meet ongoing operational and capital investment needs.
  • Maintain efficient policies and procedures to support treasury activities and regulatory reporting.

Budget

  • Assist with budget preparation and related financial planning activities.
  • Audits & Tax Returns
  • Oversee the annual audit process, ensuring that all necessary documentation is provided and that corrective actions are taken promptly as needed.
  • Serve as the primary contact for all audit-related inquiries.
  • Prepare and file all required annual 1099-NEC forms.

Sage Intacct

  • Lead efforts to expand the use of Sage Intacct to enhance financial performance and reporting capabilities.
  • Act as the main liaison with Sage Intacct Support.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to implement and integrate financial systems across Peddler’s Village.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise three finance department team members: Accounts Payable, Sales Reconciliation, and Senior Accountant.
  • Recruit and retain top talent, with a focus on succession planning and the development of Staff Accountants.
  • Foster strong employee relations within the Finance Department.
  • Promote maximum efficiency and optimal staffing within the accounting department.
  • Maintain a highly organized and professional accounting office environment.
  • Enhance the finance team’s capabilities through ongoing training and development initiatives.
  • Lead and inspire the team toward high levels of performance and engagement.
  • Establish measurable performance objectives, provide regular feedback, and conduct timely appraisals.
  • Develop and maintain personal development plans for the Controller and Staff Accountants.
  • Provide financial training to the broader management team using resources such as Sage Intacct University, internal SOPs, and the Peddler’s Village Handbook.
  • As a member of the leadership team, uphold the highest ethical standards and ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Establish and enforce a strong code of ethics, foster a culture of integrity, and address any violations or conflicts of interest appropriately.
  • Demonstrate transparency and accountability in all actions, supporting a responsible and fair organizational culture.
  • Maintain the highest standards of confidentiality across all areas of responsibility within Peddler’s Village.

 

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience as a Controller in a hospitality, real estate, and/or retail environment
  • Strong working knowledge of Sage Intacct Accounting Software and all its modules required. 
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting (or equivalent experience).
