The Interpreter/Cultural Mediator provides Spanish/English interpretation between patients/families and hospital service providers. This position coordinates the system of interpretation requests, arranges coverage of those requests and maintains data on interpretation needs. The Interpreter/Cultural Mediator assists hospital staff to develop cultural competency in working with Latino populations.
Responsibilities
- Spanish speaking patients and families and hospital providers.
- Conduct patient/family interactions with respect for differing culture, beliefs and levels of understanding.
- Maintain efficient and accurate system of logging and filling requests for interpretation for all Spanish speaking only patients.
- Monitor written translation needs and verbal interpretation needs to develop effective ways to meet those needs.
- Provide accurate written translation for all documents translated to Spanish.
- Identify opportunities to improve patient care and maintain quality improvement data.
- Assist hospital providers with their understanding and respect for cultural differences through informal and formal training.
- Mediate cultural issues for staff and families.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the age-related differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families.
- Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the CCMC STANDARDS.
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Required:
- Experience Required: Fluency in spoken and written Spanish and English.
- Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills.
Education and/or Experience Preferred:
- Education Preferred: Undergraduate degree in human services or related field, preferred.
- Bicultural preferred.
