The Role
Liberty Science Center (LSC) is seeking an AV Technician to join our Technology Department. The AV Technician is responsible for handling the day-to-day audiovisual (AV) needs of Liberty Science Center. LSC’s AV team provides services related to educational surgery video conferencing, stage productions, science demonstrations, corporate meetings, gala-style events, and planetarium/theater tech support and maintenance. We have recurring evening events, including After Dark, Community Evening, and Members Night.

You are a customer service champion, consistently making it your top priority to ensure a seamless and positive experience for all. You are dedicated to providing timely and efficient onsite technical support, particularly for critical functions such as LSC Board meetings, dynamic live events, and diverse guest-related technology needs. You are highly adept at identifying and resolving technical issues, demonstrating a strong ability to troubleshoot effectively and decisively on the spot. This includes everything from audio-visual glitches to connectivity challenges.
What You’ll Do
Below is an overview of your essential functions; please note this is not an exhaustive list as new responsibilities can be added as business needs demand:
Onsite AV Support:
- Set up, operate, and break down sound, video, and lighting equipment for events
- Conduct pre-event end-to-end testing to ensure full functionality
- Troubleshoot permanently installed audiovisual systems in event spaces and theaters like the 3D movie theater and the biggest planetarium in the USA
- Program and schedule digital content for the dynamic signage
- Support live science demonstrations with audio and visual components
- On operational days, be responsible for the start-up and shut-down of AV equipment
- Program the 3D movie schedule onto the Dolby cinema server
- Assist with preventive maintenance. For example, changing projector lamps and 3D glasses washer upkeep
- Help maintain our seamless troubleshooting process by logging, tracking, and documenting technical issues and their resolutions as they occur
- Utilize a ticketing system to manage AV requests from different departments
- Coverage on an as-needed basis to run a full-dome movie in the planetarium
- Ensure effective use of conference room and classroom technology by instructing staff on the AV hardware functionalities
- Assist the IT team with performing backups and updates for devices like Microsoft/Lenovo laptops, Mac computers, iPads, and Android ticket scanners

Preferred Qualifications & Experience
- 3+ years of audio visual experience in support and/or staging for either a large organization or production company
- Experienced in video/audio recording and editing with production software such as Garageband, QLab, Adobe Creative Suite, iMovie
- Stage and Intelligent lighting experience a plus
- Movie theater and planetarium equipment knowledge
- Dante
- Understanding of audio and video signal flow
- PowerPoint
- Knowledge of video conferencing, specifically Poly codecs (formally Polycom)
- Up-to-date knowledge of best practices in AV
- Basic IT knowledge
- Knowledge of Google Workspace, Teams, and Zoom applications
- Familiarity with Windows and Mac computers
- Crestron
- Hybrid meeting set-ups
- Sound and video equipment (mics, speakers, analog and digital audio mixing consoles, projectors, TVs, video switchers, playback media, computers)
Classification & Schedule
AV Technicians are required to work flexible hours, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and most major holidays, to meet business needs. AV Technician usually works 24 - 32 hours per week on average. Shifts can range from 5 to 10 hours. Must have availability Wednesday through Sunday. The AV Technician is a part-time position which is non-exempt, meaning this role is eligible for overtime for work that exceeds 40 hours per work week; however, all overtime must be approved in advance by the role’s supervisor.
This position must be available to work onsite at Liberty Science Center. This role is not eligible for remote or hybrid work.
Travel
There is no travel required for this position.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to lift up to 40 pounds, stand for long periods of time, and be able to crawl on hands and knees to run and tape down cables. The employee must also be comfortable with heights, occasionally working on ladders and scaffolding. Additionally, the AV Technician must be comfortable working in low lighting, with science demonstrations that have strobe lighting and loud noises, and viewing live surgery broadcasts.

Compensation & Benefits
The AV Technician is compensated at a rate of $23.50/hour. Liberty Science Center also provides perks for all eligible part-time employees, including:
