The primary role of the Director of People is to lead, oversee, and direct the daily, weekly, and monthly operations of the Human Resources department. The Director of People is ultimately responsible for resolution of employee-related issues, recruitment prioritization and execution, employee relations, performance management, training programs, and employee development. It is imperative for the Director of People to focus on creating a professional, productive, and safe workplace where everyone can and does work to realize our company goals.
This role will primarily work from our Santa Barbara offices but may require occasional personnel-related visits to our Ventura office and project properties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
People Strategy & Leadership
• Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy that supports organizational growth and performance
• Lead, mentor, and manage People Operations Manager to execute on hiring, onboarding, employee relations, and development initiatives
• Act as a thought partner to the executive team, advising on org structure, talent planning, and workforce optimization
• Champion a culture of accountability, inclusion, learning, and well-being.
• Provide HR data and insights for decision-making
Talent Acquisition & Development
• Oversee full-cycle recruitment processes; ensure alignment between talent needs and business goals
• Develop employer branding strategies to attract high-caliber talent.
• Implement performance management frameworks that promote continuous feedback, growth, and recognition
• Design and launch professional development programs to nurture leadership and skill advancement
Compliance & HR Operations
• Maintain safety systems and monitor completion of required annual training for shop/office employees
• Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations
• Oversee compensation, benefits, and leave administration programs in collaboration with Finance
• Manage and optimize HRIS systems, workflows, and documentation
• Monitor and improve HR metrics and reporting to drive informed decisions
• Develop and maintain employee handbook and HR policies
• Conduct internal audits and prepare for external compliance checks
Employee Experience & Culture
• Foster a positive and equitable workplace environment through clear communication, engagement strategies, and cultural programming
• Measure and improve employee satisfaction, retention, and productivity through surveys, feedback loops, and data analysis
• Lead diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) efforts across all levels of the organization.
• Manage conflict resolution, investigations, and sensitive employee issues with discretion and fairness
Process & Platform Development
• Create, refine, and maintain Human Resources processes, including onboarding, offboarding, performance reviews, bonus structures, etc.
• Identify, implement, and maintain relevant technology platforms and tools for timekeeping, payroll, HRIS, communication with other departments, etc.
• Frequently and persistently review processes and procedures involving the Human Resources department to find and recommend opportunities for improvement
Employee Records & Data Management
• Maintain accurate and confidential employee files
• Manage HRIS systems (e.g., work status, job titles, compensation, etc.)
• Track employment history, benefits, and compliance documentation
Payroll Administration
• Coordinate payroll inputs and run payroll weekly using HRIS
• Identify and resolve errors with payroll worksheets to ensure accurate and timely processing
Qualification Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Psychology, Business Administration, or related field; advanced degree or certifications (e.g., SHRM-SCP, SPHR) preferred
• 7-10 years of experience in HR/People leadership, with at least 3 years in a strategic HR role
• Strong computer skills, including use of spreadsheet, text-editing, and HRIS platforms
• Proven success building and scaling HR functions in dynamic, growing organizations
• Exceptional interpersonal, coaching, and communication skills
• Ability to balance empathy and pragmatism in decision-making
• Strong written communication, including the use of correct grammar and spelling
• Ability to work under pressure and coordinate multiple activities and groups of people effectively and efficiently
• Ability to encourage a positive team atmosphere and build morale to meet group commitments and goals
• Propensity for organization and effective time management
• Professionalism in all situations, including reacting well under pressure and following through on commitments
