About the Department
Serves as a specialist under the direction of the Services Programs Coordinator. Functions as a Reentry Affairs Specialist (RAS) within the Danville Adult Detention Center (ADC). Responsible for monitoring, delivering and coordinating reentry programs and initiatives, as well as overseeing the recruitment and management of the Volunteer Services Program. Serves as the liaison with local community members and agencies to develop and maintain recidivism reduction partnerships and resources that enhance the successful return of inmates to their communities.
Position Duties

- Independently conducts group guidance sessions of a varying nature. Counseling shall include institutional adjustment, release planning, interpersonal communications, and individual counseling sessions varying in methods and intensity relevant to the individual's unique circumstances.
- Aids the individual inmate in navigating the conditions of living within the ADC complex environment and assists him in developing new adjustment techniques; assists the inmate view problems objectively and realistically; routinely deals with community resources to secure information and develop release plans; may correspond with attorneys, judges, probation and parole officers, and other professionals regarding individual inmate cases.
- Provides direct services through group and individual instruction and training to inmates on a variety of reentry topics. This includes, but is not limited to, offering programming and individualized assistance to inmates for reentry needs; will generate reports related to volunteers and contractors providing services to the institution; responds to inmate’s requests and assists with reentry related questions, as well as contacts external resources to obtain specific information for offenders, when feasible (ID assistance, Social Security Benefits, etc.).
- Responsible for the quality control of statistical reports generated for the command staff and outside stakeholders when applicable; assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of automated systems designed specifically to establish efficient methods for information collection and distribution.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED supplemented by at least two years of post-secondary study or training: e.g., counseling, human services, psychology, social work; or two years of specialized experience in the line of work to be performed. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Certifications/Licenses
- Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record according to City Criteria
- First Aid/CPR/Bloodborne Pathogens
Advanced knowledge of the subject matter. Complete comprehension of the subject area to solve common and unusual problems, able to advise on technical matters, and serve as a resource on the subject for others.
Reading
Advanced: Ability to read literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and/or legal documents.
Writing
Intermediate: Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
Math
Basic: Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
Communication Skills
Decisions regarding interpretation of existing policies may be made. Contacts may involve stressful, negative interactions requiring high levels of tact and the ability to respond to aggressive interpersonal interactions. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.
Independence and Decision-Making
Normally performs the duty assignment according to his or her own judgment, requesting supervisory assistance only when necessary. Special projects are managed with little oversight and assignments may be reviewed upon completion. Performance reviewed periodically.
Technical Skills
Work requires comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is sedentary in nature, requiring occasional light physical exertion. Requires adequate vision, hearing and talking to use a computer, telephone and communicating effectively with others.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed in an office environment in a secure detention facility, where there is constant exposure to communicable diseases, and occasional exposure to physical danger or abuse. There is seasonal exposure to extreme temperatures and wetness/humidity. There is rare exposure to chemical, electrical, and fire hazards.
The employee is expected to use appropriate protective equipment for the assigned task (firearm, pepper spray, hand cuffs, gloves, etc.); and any other equipment as apparent or assigned. Apply Now
