About the Role
Nium is looking for a Senior Database Administrator (DBA) to lead the architecture, performance, and reliability of our PostgreSQL, MongoDB, RedShift and other database platforms hosted on AWS (primarily RDS/Aurora). You'll play a critical role in enabling modern, automated, and resilient database operations that support our engineering and analytics teams.
This is not your traditional DBA role — we're looking for someone who brings both deep database internals knowledge and modern practices like DBOps, schema versioning, infrastructure-as-code, and database CI/CD.
You’ll collaborate closely with DevOps, SREs, and Developers to streamline deployments, improve observability, and build a scalable data platform.
Responsibilities
Architect, manage, and scale cloud-native PostgreSQL and MongoDB clusters (primarily AWS RDS/Aurora, MongoDB Atlas)
Implement and maintain schema change automation using tools like Liquibase, Flyway, or equivalent
Collaborate with engineering teams on schema design, query optimization, indexing strategies, and ORM tuning
Establish and evolve database CI/CD pipelines integrated with GitOps practices
Monitor database health and performance using observability tools such as CloudWatch, Datadog, Prometheus/Grafana, or pg_stat_statements
Drive automation for routine operations: failover, backup validation, data masking, role management, etc.
Manage and secure database environments with IAM, KMS, and encrypted connections
Plan and execute migration strategies (engine-to-engine, sharded or replicated setups)
Document architecture, runbooks, schema evolution, and disaster recovery plans
Support compliance needs (e.g., audit logging, PCI-DSS, GDPR/data retention policies)
Coach developers and data analysts on best practices for schema evolution, query design, and performance debugging
Requirements
6+ years of production experience with PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and MySQL including high-availability and disaster recovery setups
Proven experience with cloud-managed databases (e.g., AWS RDS, Aurora, DocumentDB)
Strong SQL and NoSQL tuning skills; deep knowledge of query plans, vacuum/analyze, index strategies
Hands-on with Liquibase, Flyway, or similar tools for version-controlled schema management
Proficient in scripting with Python, Bash, or Go for automation
Familiarity with AWS CLI/SDK, Terraform, or CloudFormation for database IaC
Experience with monitoring, alerting, and performance dashboards
Strong understanding of replication, sharding, WAL tuning, and data lifecycle management
