Special Jobs Coordinator I:

Assists in coordination and scheduling of equipment, materials and personnel for special transportation jobs and activities. Leads the work of specialized maintenance and technical workers. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires extensive contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Special Jobs coordinator I

  • Assists in assigning and overseeing the work of special jobs and/or contracted crews.
  • Assists in coordinating with local authorities to develop/implement traffic management plans for special events and incidents including handling and disposal of hazardous material spills on highways; responds as required to perform these functions.
  • Assists in preparing and giving presentations to the public regarding area of responsibility.
  • Assists in preparing daily and weekly work schedules.
  • Assists in the procurement and payment of specialized contractors for specific incident clean up and removal.
  • Ensures projects follow established safety guidelines.
  • Handles public complaints.
  • Inspects maintenance contract work.
  • Trains employees on the use of equipment and procedures.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: 6 years in roadway maintenance, construction, traffic management, courtesy patrol. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application.

Competencies:

Special Jobs Coordinator I

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • Incident management procedures
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Methods and procedures involving storage & transport of hazardous materials
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
  • Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files and reports
  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

 Special Jobs Coordinator I

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time.
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication.
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts.
  • Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures.
